Method and apparatus for detecting failure of an ink jet printing device
Abstract
Abstract A method of determining failure of an ink jet printing apparatus in which a plurality of ink droplets are jetted from each of the nozzles of the ink jet printing apparatus in succession toward a receiving electrode. The ink droplets are electrically charged as they travel toward the receiving electrodes, and a waveform signal which is the summation of the signals developed by each of the particles is used to determine whether the ink jet printing apparatus is functioning properly. An apparatus is also disclosed for determining whether the ink jet printing apparatus is functioning properly and includes charging electrodes in close proximity to jetting nozzles of an ink jet printing head and adapted to electrically charge ink droplets jetted from the nozzles as they travel toward a receiving electrode. Intermediate electrodes which are maintained at constant potential are positioned between the charging electrodes and the receiving electrode and serve to increase the magnitude of the signal imposed upon the receiving electrode.
