Abstract

Abstract Highly permeable zones in a subterranean formation are selectively plugged by injecting a melamine formaldehyde solution via a well into the highly permeable zones. The solution is water soluble and preferentially enters water-containing zones where it reacts to form a resin at a temperature of from about 25° C. to about 120° C. and a pH of from about 7 to 12 and over a period of from about 1 to 4 days. The resulting resin substantially plugs the highly permeable zones in the formation.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 117 words
A process for selectively plugging highly permeable zones of a subterranean formation comprising the steps of: (a) dissolving melamine and formaldehyde in a water soluble solvent wherein the molar ratio of formaldehyde to melamine is at least about 2:1 in said solvent; (b) injecting said melamine, formaldehyde and solvent into said highly permeable zones via a well in fluid communication with said zones; and (c) reacting said melamine and formaldehyde in situ at a temperature of from about 25° C. to about 120° C. and at a pH of from about 7 to about 12 for a time of from about 1 to about 4 days to produce a resin which substantially plugs said highly permeable zones.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 117 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the molar ratio of formaldehyde to melamine is at least about 4:1 in said solvent.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 35 words
The process of claim 2 wherein the concentration of said melamine is from about 0.5% to about 10% by weight and said formaldehyde is from about 0.5% to about 10% by weight in said solvent.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 35 words
The process of claim 3 wherein the concentration of said melamine is from about 1% to about 2% by weight and said formaldehyde is from about 1% to about 2% by weight in said solvent.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 10 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said solvent is water.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 18 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said solvent is an alcohol containing less than about 6 carbon atoms.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 31 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the pH of said solution is adjusted from about 7 to about 12 prior to injecting said solution by adding a base to said solution.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 37 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the pH of water within said formation is adjusted to from about 7 to about 5 after the reaction of step (c) is initiated by injecting an acid into said formation.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 31 words
The process of claim 8 wherein said acid is injected into said formation from about 12 to about 24 hours after said melamine and formaldehyde reach the temperature of said formation.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 24 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said melamine and formaldehyde are reacted at a temperature of from about 80° C. to about 110° C.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 23 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said melamine and formaldehyde are reacted for a time of from about 1 to about 2 days.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 22 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said melamine and formaldehyde are reacted at a pH of from about 8 to about 9.
