Abstract

Abstract A refrigeration system for an automotive air conditioner includes an evaporator and a variable displacement refrigerant compressor adapted to be driven by an automotive engine. In order to control the refrigeration system, detectors are provided to detect a condition related to the cooling operation of the evaporator, such as air temperature just downstream of the evaporator or the refrigerant pressure, and to detect air temperature in the occupant compartment of the automobile, ambient air temperature outside the automobile or intake air temperature upstream of the evaporator. Signals emitted by the detectors are utilized to control the compressor operation such that the displacement capacity of the compressor is varied stepwise and the compressor is operated intermittently whereby the load on the engine is reduced and the frosting of the evaporator is prevented.
