A cleaning device for removing residual on a surface of an image bearing member of an image formation aparatus, comprising: a cleaning member held in pressure contact with the surface of the image bearing member; and means for detecting the pressure contact condition of said cleaning member with respect to the surface of the image bearing member, said detecting means having a strain detecting element provided on said cleaning member; and means, responsive to said detecting means, for indicating a desired adjustment of the pressure contact condition of said cleaning member with respect to the surface of the image bearing member.
