Abstract

Abstract The specification discloses new and improved processes for forming water-free metal or non-metal oxide materials, which may then be melted and formed into optical components in vitreous or crystal form, which are free of the hydrogen-impurity absorption in the near infrared wavelength range. In one process a water-free oxide is prepared by reacting a chosen organic compound containing oxygen bonded to an atom of the metal or non-metal, with a chosen organic acid anhydride to form an intermediate product which is then decomposed to form the desired oxide and to simultaneously regenerate the organic acid anhydride. The regenerated organic acid anhydride reacts with and removes traces of water and water-derived impurities during the formation of the desired oxide and prevents the inclusion of these impurities in the oxide as formed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 156 words
A process for the preparation of a water-free oxide of an element selected from the group consisting of silicon, germanium, titanium and zirconium, comprising the steps of: (a) providing a starting material comprising an alkoxy compound of said element containing a multiplicity of first oxygen-containing groups bonded to a single atom of said element through atoms of said oxygen; (b) providing trifluoroacetic anhydride, which is capable of reacting with said starting material to replace said first oxygen-containing groups with second oxygen-containing groups derived from said anhydride, to form an unstable intermediate product which can be subsequently decomposed; and (c) reacting said starting material with said anhydride to form said intermediate product and then decomposing said intermediate product by heating, to form said oxide and to simultaneously regenerate said trifluoroacetic anhydride, whereby said regenerated anhydride reacts with and removes traces of water and water-derived impurities during the formation of said oxide, to thereby provide said water-free oxide.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 156 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 32 words
The process set forth in claim 1 wherein: (a) said starting material is tetraethylorthosilicate; (b) said trifluoroacetic anhydride is mixed with 20 percent trifluoroacetic acid; and (c) said oxide is silicon dioxide.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 23 words
The process set forth in claim 1 wherein: (a) said starting material is a germanium tetraethoxide; and (b) said oxide is germanium dioxide.
