Abstract

Abstract A dosage form that coadministers a drug and a percutaneous absorption enhancer to a defined area of the skin. The dosage form comprises a body that contains supplies of drug and enhancer and has a basal surface that contacts the area of skin and transmits the drug and enhancer to the area for absorption thereby. The drug is provided to the basal surface at a rate at least as great as the rate at which the skin is able to absorb the drug whereas the enhancer is via a rate controlling means at a substantially constant rate that increases the permeability of the treated area of skin to the drug to a level at which the drug is absorbed a therapeutically effective rate.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 88 words
A percutaneous absorption enhancer dispenser adapted to be superposed upon the drug reservoir means of a transdermal drug delivery device to control the rate by which the drug within said reservoir means is absorbed through the skin, said enhancer dispenser comprising, in combination: (a) percutaneous absorption enhancer reservoir means; and (b) percutaneous absorption enhancer release rate controlling means for maintaining substantially constant, the rate at which said percutaneous absorption enhancer is released through the surface of said percutaneous absorption enhancer dispenser adapted to contact said drug reservoir means.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 88 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
The dispenser of claim 1 further comprising means for maintaining said enhancer reservoir in enhancer transferring relationship to said drug reservoir means.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
The dispenser of claim 1 comprising a laminate of: (a) an enhancer impermeable backing, (b) said percutaneous enhancer reservoir means, and (c) said enhancer release rate controlling means.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 108 words
A transdermal drug delivery device comprising, in combination, the enhancer dispenser of claim 3 superposed upon drug reservoir means adapted to deliver drug to the skin at a rate in excess of the rate that said drug is absorbable through a predetermined area of untreated skin, wherein said enhancer release rate controlling means is adapted to deliver said percutaneous absorption enhancer at a predetermined, substantially constant rate selected to permit absorption of said drug at a rate higher than the rate of absorption through untreated skin and lower than the rate said drug reservoir means is capable of delivering said drug to the predetermined area of the skin.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 48 words
The dispenser of claim 3, wherein said enhancer reservoir means comprises a dispersion of said enhancer in a matrix, said means for controlling the release of said enhancer is a release rate controlling membrane and said enhancer reservoir means is sandwiched between said impermeable backing and said membrane.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 108 words
A transdermal drug delivery device comprising, in combination, the enhancer dispenser of claim 5 superposed upon drug reservoir means adapted to deliver drug to the skin at a rate in excess of the rate that said drug is absorbable through a predetermined area of untreated skin, wherein said enhancer release rate controlling means is adapted to deliver said percutaneous absorption enhancer at a predetermined, substantially constant rate selected to permit absorption of said drug at a rate higher than the rate of absorption through untreated skin and lower than the rate said drug reservoir means is capable of delivering said drug to the predetermined area of the skin.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 19 words
The dispenser of claim 5 comprising means for maintaining said dispenser in enhancer transferring relationship to said drug reservoir.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 32 words
The dispenser of claim 7 wherein said means for maintaining said enhancer reservoir in enhancer transferring relationship to said drug reservoir means is an adhesive property of said trandermal drug delivery device.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 108 words
A transdermal drug delivery device comprising, in combination, the enhancer dispenser of claim 21 superposed upon drug reservoir means adapted to deliver drug to the skin at a rate in excess of the rate that said drug is absorbable through a predetermined area of untreated skin, wherein said enhancer release rate controlling means is adapted to deliver said percutaneous absorption enhancer at a predetermined, substantially constant rate selected to permit absorption of said drug at a rate higher than the rate of absorption through untreated skin and lower than the rate said drug reservoir means is capable of delivering said drug to the predetermined area of the skin.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 14 words
The transdermal drug delivery device of claim 23 wherein said permeation enhancer is ethanol.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 108 words
A transdermal drug delivery device comprising, in combination, the enhancer dispenser of claim 1 superposed upon drug reservoir means adapted to deliver drug to the skin at a rate in excess of the rate that said drug is absorbable through a predetermined area of untreated skin, wherein said enhancer release rate controlling means is adapted to deliver said percutaneous absorption enhancer at a predetermined, substantially constant rate selected to permit absorption of said drug at a rate higher than the rate of absorption through untreated skin and lower than the rate said drug reservoir means is capable of delivering said drug to the predetermined area of the skin.
