Abstract

Abstract An air drying coating adapted to deposit coatings possessing long term water repellency is disclosed in which a high viscosity unsaturated hydroxy functional alkyd resin is combined with from 13-63 parts by weight of dispersed particles of granulated wax per 100 parts of the alkyd resin, the solvent being mineral spirits which cannot itself dissolve the large amount of wax needed, and the wax being a paraffin wax having an average melting point in the range of 50° C.-70° C., preferably 55° C.-65° C.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 98 words
An air drying coating adapted to deposit coatings possessing long term water repellency comprising, a solution of high viscosity unsaturated hydroxy functional oil-modified alkyd resin in mineral spirits, and from 13-63 parts by weight of dissolved paraffin wax having an average melting point in the range of 50° C. to 70° C. per 100 parts of said alkyd resin, said wax being incorporated by adding granules of said wax having an average diameter of less than 1 mm to said alkyd resin solution and vigorously agitating the mixture to increase the temperature to at least about 35° C.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 98 words
An air drying coating adapted to deposit coatings possessing long term water repellency comprising, a solution of high viscosity unsaturated hydroxy functional oil-modified alkyd resin in mineral spirits, and from 13-63 parts by weight of dissolved paraffin wax having an average melting point in the range of 50° C. to 70° C. per 100 parts of said alkyd resin, said wax being incorporated by adding granules of said wax having an average diameter of less than 1 mm to said alkyd resin solution and vigorously agitating the mixture to increase the temperature to at least about 35° C.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 13 words
A coating as recited in claim 1 in which said coating is clear.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 13 words
A coating as recited in claim 1 in which said coating contains pigments.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 45 words
A coating as recited in claim 1 in which said wax has an average melting point in the range of 55° C. to 65° C. and is used in an amount of from 53 to 63 parts by weight per 100 parts of said alkyd.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 85 words
A coating as recited in claims 1 or 4 in which said alkyd resin is an hydroxyl-functional polyester containing at least 35% by weight of oil or oil fatty acid of drying or semi-drying character, and in which the excess of hydroxyl over carboxyl functionality is from 10% to 40%, at least 50% of the hydroxy functionality being provided by a polyhydric alcohol containing at least three hydroxyl groups per molecule, and said alkyd resin is cooked to an acid value of less than 30.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 14 words
A coating as recited in claim 5 in which said polyhydric alcohol is pentaerythritol.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 14 words
A coating as recited in claim 6 in which said oil is soybean oil.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 100 words
A method of forming an air drying coating adapted to deposit a coating possessing long term water repellency comprising, adding granules of paraffin wax having an average diameter less than 1 mm and an average melting point in the range of 50° C. to 70° C. to a solution of high viscosity unsaturated hydroxy functional oil-modified alkyd resin in mineral spirits, said wax being added in an amount of from 13-63 parts by weight per 100 parts of said alkyl resin, and vigorously agitating the mixture to increase the temperature to at least about 35° C. to dissolve said wax.
Claim 10
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method as recited in claim 8 in which the temperature which is reached on agitation is limited to about 40° C.
