Abstract

Abstract A screwless wiring or connecting terminal for electric conductors is disclosed. According to the invention, a clamping spring of the leaf type is secured in a housing such that it can be tensioned in ring- or hairpin-fashion. One end of the spring can be detented in a cocked position by a detent associated with the spring. A conductor can be clamped between the one end of the spring and the housing when one end of the spring is released. A terminal according to the invention has the advantage that the spring terminal can be supplied from the factory in a cocked position, so that it is not necessary for the customer to apply high forces to insert and clamp a conductor. Terminals according to the invention are particularly well-suited for use in equipment having a large number of terminals, such as electromagnetic switchgear.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 142 words
A screwless wiring or connecting terminal comprising a housing, a leaf-type clamping spring configured and secured in the housing so that a first end of the spring can be tensioned from an uncocked position into a releasable cocked position in which the first end of the spring extends toward an adjacent portion of the spring, and a detent disposed in the adjacent portion of the spring configured to releasably retain the first end of the spring in the cocked position, there being a predetermined clearance between the first end of the spring and the interior of the housing in the cocked position of the spring such that a conductor can be inserted therebetween without having to overcome any spring tension, the first end and the housing being adapted when in the uncocked position of the spring to engage a conductor inserted therebetween.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 142 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
The terminal according to claim 1 wherein the detent comprises an opening in the spring.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 16 words
The terminal according to claim 1 wherein the detent comprises a projection extending from the spring.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 32 words
The terminal according to claim 1 and including a strut 18 disposed in the housing so as to limit the extent to which the first end of the spring can be tensioned.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
The terminal according to claim 1 wherein the housing has an opening therein providing access to the first end of the spring.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 30 words
The terminal according to claim 1 wherein the spring has a second end which engages the housing and maintains the spring secured in the housing in cooperation with the detent.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 49 words
The terminal according to claim 1 and comprising a connecting conductor strip disposed in the interior of the housing opposite the first end of the spring, the first end and the conductor strip being adapted when in the uncocked position of the spring to engage a conductor inserted therebetween.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 42 words
The terminal according to claim 1 wherein the detent is disposed so as to be contacted by a conductor inserted into the housing between the housing and the first end of the cocked spring to release the first end of the spring.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 46 words
The terminal according to claim 1 wherein the spring has a second end and is configured and secured in the housing such that tensioning of the second end releases the first end from the detent thereby permitting the first end to flex into its uncocked position.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 22 words
The terminal according to claim 1 or 9 including spaced projections in the housing which prevent movement of the spring during tensioning.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 26 words
The terminal according to claim 9 wherein the housing has at least one opening therein providing access to the first and second ends of the spring.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 68 words
The terminal according to claim 11 and comprising a connecting conductor strip disposed in the interior of the housing opposite the first end of the spring, the first end and the conductor strip being adapted when in the uncocked position of the spring to engage a conductor inserted therebetween, the conductor strip having at least one opening which registers with the at least one opening of the housing.
