Roll-wrapping apparatus and method

Claim 2

Roll-wrapping apparatus including roll feed means for moving a roll through a work zone, film means for maintaining a film curtain extending across one side of the work zone, a label feeder located on the side of the film curtain away from the work zone for supplying individual labels for pickup, label transfer means movable between a label presentation position in the path of movement of the roll to the work zone adjacent said side of the film curtain away from the work zone and a label pickup position adjacent the label feeder such that individual labels supplied by the feeder are moved to the presentation position with part of the label closely adjacent the film, film seal means at the work zone whereby the label transfer means moves individual labels to said position and the roll feed means moves rolls downstream against the label and film to wrap the label and film around the roll and the film seal means seals the wrapped film to form a film envelope surrounding the roll, wherein the improvement comprises first and second electrostatic charging members positioned on opposite sides of the film curtain and the label when the label is in the presentation position for providing opposite polarity electrostatic charges to the adjacent portions of the label and film curtain, and a charging member shifting mechanism driven by the apparatus responsive to the position of the label transfer assembly for moving the one charging member on said side of the film curtain away from the work zone to a position away from the film and out of the path of movement of the label transfer assembly to and from the label presentation position, the position of the said charging one member adjacent the curtain lying in the path of movement of the label transfer assembly.

Claim 3

Roll-wrapping apparatus including roll feed means for moving a roll through a work zone, film means for maintaining a film curtain extending across one side of the work zone, a label feeder located on the side of the film curtain away from the work zone for supplying individual labels for pickup, label transfer means movable between a label presentation position in the path of movement of the roll to the work zone adjacent said side of the film curtain away from the work zone and a label pickup position adjacent the label feeder such that individual labels supplied by the feeder are moved to the presentation position with part of the label closely adjacent the film, film seal means at the work zone whereby the label transfer means moves individual labels to said position and roll feed means moves rolls downstream against the label and film to wrap the label and film around the roll and the film seal means seals the wrapped film to form a film envelope surrounding the roll, wherein the improvement comprises first and second electrostatic charging members positioned on opposite sides of the film curtain and the label when the label is in the presentation position for providing opposite polarity elecrostatic charges to the adjacent portions of the label and film curtain, and a shifting mechanism for moving the one charging member on said side of the film curtain away from the work zone to a position away from the film and out of the path of movement of the label transfer assembly during movement of the label transfer assembly toward the label feeder, the mechanism including a drive member operable to move said label transfer means between the label presentation position and the label pickup position and linkage means between the label transfer means and said one charging member whereby movement of the label transfer assembly automatically moves the charging member, the position of said one member adjacent the curtain lying in the path of movement of the label transfer assembly.

Claim 4

Roll-wrapping apparatus including roll feed means for moving a roll through a work zone, film means for maintaining a film curtain extending across one side of the work zone, a label feeder located on the side of the film curtain away from the work zone for supplying individual labels for pickup, label transfer means movable between a label presentation position in the path of movement of the roll to the work zone adjacent said side of the film curtain away from the work zone and a label pickup position adjacent the label feeder such that individual labels supplied by the feeder are moved to the presentation position with part of the label closely adjacent the film, film seal means at the work zone whereby the label transfer means moves individual labels to said position and roll feed means moves rolls downstream against the label and film to wrap the label and film around the roll and the film seal means seals the wrapped film to form a film envelope surrounding the roll, wherein the improvement comprises first and second electrostatic charging members positioned on opposite sides of the film curtain and the label when the label is in the presentation position for providing opposite polarity elecrostatic charges to the adjacent portions of the label and film curtain, and a shifting mechanism for moving the one charging member on said side of the film curtain away from the work zone to a position away from the film and out of the path of movement of the label transfer assembly during movement of the label transfer assembly toward the label feeder, the mechanism including a drive member operable to move said label transfer means between the label presentation position and the label pickup position and linkage means between the label transfer means and said one charging member whereby movement of the label transfer assembly automatically moves the charging member, the position of said one member adjacent the curtain lying in the path of movement of the label transfer assembly.

Claim 5

Roll-wrapping apparatus as in claim 2 wherein the label transfer assembly includes a pivot arm mounted on a shaft and said linkage means includes a first linkage pivot arm, a connection securing said one charging member to such pivot arm, a second linkage pivot arm rotatable with said transfer assembly pivot arm and a link joining said first and second pivot arms.

Claim 6

Roll-wrapping apparatus as in claim 3 wherein said first and second linkage pivot arms extend in approximately the same direction.

Claim 7

A roll-wrapping apparatus including roll feed means for moving a roll through a work zone, film means for maintaining a film curtain extending across one side of the work zone, film seal means in the work zone, a label holder, means for moving the label holder between a label pickup position remote from the work zone and a position adjacent the side of the film curtain away from the work zone whereby the roll feed means moves a roll downstream against a label in the label holder and film in the curtain to wrap the label and film around the roll and the film seal means seals the wrapped film to form a film envelope surrounding the roll, wherein the improvement comprises an electrostatic charging member positioned closely adjacent said side of the film curtain in the path of movement of said label holder for electrostatically charging a label in the label holder located between the charging member and the curtain and a shifting linkage joining the label holder and the charging member for moving said charging member in response to movement of said label holder away from the work zone and out of the path of movement of the label holder during movement of the label holder between the label pickup position and the position adjacent the side of the film curtain.

Claim 8

A roll-wrapping apparatus including roll feed means for moving a roll through a work zone, film means for maintaining a film curtain extending across one side of the work zone, film seal means in the work zone, a label holder, means for moving the label holder between a label pickup position remote from the work zone and a position adjacent the side of the film curtain away from the work zone whereby the roll feed means moves a roll downstream against a label in the label holder and film in the curtain to wrap the label and film around the roll and the film seal means seals the wrapped film to form a film envelope surrounding the roll, wherein the improvement comprises an electrostatic charging member positioned closely adjacent said side of the film curtain in the path of movement of said label holder for electrostatically charging a label in the label holder located between the charging member and the curtain and a shifting linkage joining the label holder and the charging member for moving said charging member in response to movement of said label holder away from the work zone and out of the path of movement of the label holder during movement of the label holder between the label pickup position and the position adjacent the side of the film curtain.

Claim 9

Roll-wrapping apparatus as in claim 5 including means for moving the label holder along a path on said side of the film curtain away from the work zone when said charging member is away from the work zone, the path of movement of the label holder intersecting the position of the charging member adjacent the film curtain.

Claim 10

Roll-wrapping apparatus as in claim 6 including a common operator for moving both said label holder and charging member.

Claim 11

Roll-wrapping apparatus as in claim 7 wherein said charging member is normally positioned adjacent one edge of said label.

Claim 12

Roll-wrapping apparatus as in claim 8 including a second charging member located on the side of said film adjacent the work zone opposite said edge of the label.
