Abstract

Abstract System for controlling the speed of a vehicle such as an automobile. The operator selects the desired speed, and thereafter the system brings the vehicle to the desired speed and maintains it at that speed. The system can be calibrated for any given vehicle, and it cannot be engaged until the vehicle is moving at a predetermined percentage or fraction of the desired speed. The system can be disengaged in a number of ways to return full control of the vehicle to the operator, and redundant circuits are employed to assure disengagement upon application of the brakes. As the desired speed is approached, the amount of correction is decreased to assure a smooth, positive transition to the desired speed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 186 words
In a system for controlling the speed of a vehicle: means for providing an input signal corresponding to the speed of the vehicle, means for providing a reference signal corresponding to the desired speed of travel, comparator means for monitoring the input signal and the reference signal to provide an output signal corresponding to the relative levels of said signals, a vacuum-operated actuator connected to the throttle system of the vehicle, said actuator having a vacuum chamber, an electrically operated, normally closed valve connected to a source of vacuum and responsive to the output signal from the comparator means for applying vacuum to the actuator chamber to move the throttle in one direction, an electrically operated, normally open valve vented to the atmosphere and responsive to the output signal from the comparator means for venting the actuator chamber to move the throttle in the opposite direction, and an electrically operated, normally closed valve vented to the atmosphere and responsive to the braking system of the vehicle for venting the actuator chamber to release the vehicle from the control of the system upon braking of the vehicle.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 186 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 187 words
In a system for controlling the speed of a vehicle having throttle and brake controls: a vacuum operated actuator connected to the throttle control of the vehicle, said actuator having a vacuum chamber, first and second electrically operated valves responsive to the speed of the vehicle for controlling the application of vacuum to the actuator chamber to move the throttle in first and second directions corresponding to increasing and decreasing vehicle speeds, said first valve being normally closed and connected to a source of vacuum, said second valve being normally open and vented to the atmosphere, means responsive to the brake control of the vehicle for de-energizing the first and second valves and venting the actuator chamber to the atmosphere upon braking of the vehicle, and a third electrically operated, normally closed valve vented to the atmosphere and responsive to the brake control for venting the actuator chamber to the atmosphere upon braking of the vehicle, whereby the vehicle is released from control by the system in a redundant manner by both the first and second valves and the third valve upon actuation of the brake control.
