Abstract

Abstract Alkylamine compounds which contain at least two alkyl substituents containing from about 2 to about 6 carbon atoms may be alkylated at temperatures ranging from about 50 DEG to about 300 DEG C. and pressures ranging from about 20 to about 300 atmospheres in the presence of a metal carbonyl or a metal compound capable of forming a carbonyl at reaction conditions.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 63 words
A process for the self-alkylation of an amine compound which comprises reacting a reactant material consisting of an amine compound containing at least two alkyl substituents at alkylation conditions in the presence of a cobalt carbonyl, a rhodium carbonyl, or a cobalt or rhodium containing compound which is capable of forming a carbonyl under alkylation conditions, and recovering the resultant alkylated amine product.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 63 words
A process for the self-alkylation of an amine compound which comprises reacting a reactant material consisting of an amine compound containing at least two alkyl substituents at alkylation conditions in the presence of a cobalt carbonyl, a rhodium carbonyl, or a cobalt or rhodium containing compound which is capable of forming a carbonyl under alkylation conditions, and recovering the resultant alkylated amine product.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 42 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said alkylation conditions include a temperature in the range of from about 50° C. to about 300° C. and a pressure in the range of from about 20 to about 300 atmospheres.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
The process as set forth in claim 2 further characterized in that said pressure is effected by the presence of a carbon monoxide and hydrogen atmosphere.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said alkyl substituent of said amine contains from about 2 to about 6 carbon atoms.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 16 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said cobalt compound comprises dicobalt octacarbonyl.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 16 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said cobalt compound comprises tetracobalt dodecacarbonyl.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 17 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said rhodium compound comprises rhodium carbonyl chloride.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 30 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said amine compound is triethylamine and said alkylated amine product is a mixture of butyldiethylamine, hexyldiethylamine, octyldiethylamine, decyldiethylamine and dodecyldiethylamine.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 28 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said amine compound is tributylamine and said alkylated amine product is a mixture of octyldibutylamine, dodecyldibutylamine, and hexadecyldibutylamine.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 29 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said amine compound is dipropylamine and said alkylated amine product is a mixture of hexylpropylamine, nonylpropylamine, dodecylpropylamine and pentadecylpropylamine.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 30 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said amine compound is diethylamine and said alkylated amine product is a mixture of butylethylamine, hexylethylamine, octylethylamine, decylethylamine, and dodecylethylamine.
