Abstract

Abstract Raw shale oil is selectively dewaxed to lower the pour point by contacting a shale oil charge with a low acid crystalline zeolite. The low acid catalysts can be formed by extensive ion exchange of ZSM-5 type catalysts. The shale oil is dewaxed in the absence of hydrogen at high temperature and low pressure.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 80 words
A process for dewaxing a shale oil and converting the shale oil charge fraction to liquid products of lower boiling range which comprises contacting said charge fraction with a crystalline zeolite characterized by a silica/alumina ratio greater than 12, a constraint index between about 1 and about 12 and an acid activity measured by the alpha scale less than 10, said contacting being conducted at about 450° to about 540° C. and a pressure not greater than about 100 psig.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 80 words
A process for dewaxing a shale oil and converting the shale oil charge fraction to liquid products of lower boiling range which comprises contacting said charge fraction with a crystalline zeolite characterized by a silica/alumina ratio greater than 12, a constraint index between about 1 and about 12 and an acid activity measured by the alpha scale less than 10, said contacting being conducted at about 450° to about 540° C. and a pressure not greater than about 100 psig.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein the ion exchange sites of said zeolite are essentially occupied by alkali metal cations.

Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein said contacting is conducted in the absence of hydrogen.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 12 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein said zeolite is zeolite ZSM-5.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 19 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein said contacting is conducted at a pressure less than about 75 psig.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 14 words
A process according to claim 6 wherein said contacting is conducted at atmospheric pressure.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 12 words
A process according to claim 3 wherein said zeolite is zeolite ZSM-5.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 20 words
A process according to claim 4 wherein the ionic exchange sites of zeolite are essentially occupied by alkali metal cations.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 12 words
