Abstract

Abstract An aqueous coating composition for the corrosion-protection and/or fire-protection of substrates comprising a dispersion of chemically delaminated vermiculite lamellae in an aqueous solution or dispersion of a film-forming polymeric binder. Preferably the vermiculite lamellae are of size below 50 microns, especially below 20 microns, and the film-forming polymeric binder is in the form of a colloidal dispersion or emulsion of the polymer in water such as is commonly called a latex.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 70 words
An aqueous coating composition comprising a dispersion of an inorganic material in an aqueous solution or dispersion of a film-forming polymeric binder, characterised in that the inorganic material comprises vermiculite in the form of lamellae obtained by treating vermiculite with chemicals, swelling the treated vermiculite in water and applying shear to the swollen vermiculite in water to produce an aqueous suspension of tiny particles of thickness less than 1 micron.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 70 words
An aqueous coating composition comprising a dispersion of an inorganic material in an aqueous solution or dispersion of a film-forming polymeric binder, characterised in that the inorganic material comprises vermiculite in the form of lamellae obtained by treating vermiculite with chemicals, swelling the treated vermiculite in water and applying shear to the swollen vermiculite in water to produce an aqueous suspension of tiny particles of thickness less than 1 micron.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
An aqueous coating composition as claimed in claim 1 characterised in that the vermiculite lamellae are of size below 50 microns.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 23 words
An aqueous coating composition as claimed in claim 1 or 2 characterised in that the vermiculite lamellae are of size below 20 microns.
Claim 5
