Claim 1
Independent Claim
194 words
A fuel injection valve having a high flow rate metering portion comprising: a valve housing having a fuel flow passage which communicates fuel from a pressurized source to a truncated conical valve seat having a closure surface, said seat converging toward the axis thereof and intersecting a cylindrical metering orifice axially aligned with said flow passage; a needle valve, reciprocal in said fuel flow passage, including a valve tip having a closure surface which is operable to close the injection valve when brought into contact with said closure surface of said valve seat, the surface of said valve tip converging toward the axis thereof for forming a pintle and an annular fuel passage with said valve seat in the area downstream of said closure surface and upstream of said metering orifice for decreasing the pressure drop of the fuel therethrough; and an abruptless transitional curving surface on said valve seat beginning at said cylindrical metering orifice and tangentially ending at said closure surface, said transitional surface cooperating with said pintle for maintaining the fluid flow through said annular fuel passage so as not to induce flow separation and cavitation from said cylindrical metering orifice.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
33 words
A fuel injection valve with a metering portion as defined in claim 1 wherein: said transitional surface is formed as a truncated conical surface with a greater conical slope than said valve seat.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
64 words
A fuel injection valve as defined in claim 1 wherein: said valve tip narrows into a pintle which extends through said metering orifice, said valve tip being contoured between said closure surface and said pintle such that the cross sectional flow area of said annular fuel passage increases to a plateau value and subsequently decreases smoothly to where the fuel exits said metering orifice.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
47 words
A fuel injection valve as defined in claim 3 wherein said valve tip pintle terminates in a deflection cap having a deflection surface substantially perpendicular to the injector spray axis and the perimeter of said deflection surface being similar to the perimeter of said cylindrical metering orifice.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
79 words
An injection valve as defined in claim 4 wherein: said deflection surface controllably forms a hollow-cone spray pattern with an inner cone angle and outer cone angle by varying both the longitudinal distance between said deflection surface and the exit of said metering orifice and the space between said perimeter of said deflection surface and the perimeter of said cylindrical metering orifice such that the perimeter of said deflection surface is less than the perimeter of said metering orifice.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
36 words
An injection valve as defined in claim 5 wherein: said inner and outer cone angles are formed by varying the flow area of said annular fuel passage formed between said pintle and said cylindrical metering orifice.
