Abstract

Abstract In a skin packaging machine, a method and apparatus for maintaining a film heating oven at a low temperature wherein during a very short repeating duty cycle, e.g., less than a minute, the power to the oven heaters is applied for a short period and is shut down for the remainder of the period through solid state relay switching.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 176 words
In a skin packaging machine having an oven having heating elements, a horizontal surface below said oven to which vacuum is applied, a film receiving frame between said oven and surface, means for raising and lowering said frame, a film supply adjacent said frame, and a power supply connected to said heating elements, the method of operating said skin packaging machine comprising the steps of, pulling film onto said frame, raising said frame to a position adjacent said oven, placing a substrate and object on said surface, lowering said frame to place said film on said substrate and object, and applying power to said heating elements as follows: applying full power to said heating elements to heat said film for a first interval of time immediately prior to lowering said frame, applying low power to said heating elements before pulling said film onto said substrate for a second interval of time extending to the beginning of said first interval of time, said low power being applied by switching power on and off during respective duty cycles.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 176 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 32 words
The method as in claim 1 wherein during each duty cycle the power is switched on for one full ac cycle and is switched off for at least one full ac cycle.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
The method as in claim 1 wherein said power is switched only at approximately the zero crossover of said alternating current power.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
The method as in claim 1 further comprising the step of varying the ratio of "on" time to "off" time in said duty cycle.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method as in claim 1 further comprising the step of switching said power off after said second interval of time extends beyond approximately one and one-half minutes.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method as in claim 1 wherein each said repetitive duty cycle has a duration no longer than about one minute.
