Abstract
Abstract A radially compliant acoustic line array hose with improved toughness and wear resistance, suitable for use in towed acoustical line array sonars. The hose comprises a long extruded cylindrical tubing of a soft flexible grade of geophysical, plasticized polyvinyl chloride material with longitudinal ribs of a stiffer, harder grade of geophysical plasticized polyvinyl chloride material located at or near the tubing surface, and spaced uniformly around the circumference of the tubing. The ribs are melt-bonded to the softer thermoplastic material while each is in their respective melt stages during the extrusion process.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim
91 words
A line array hose comprising: a long cylindrical tube of soft, flexible thermoplastic material having high damping characteristics for providing low self-noise and radial compliance as said hose is towed through the water; and a first plurality of raised longitudinal ribs of a stiffer, harder thermoplastic material, bonded to said long cylindrical tube and spaced uniformly around the circumference thereof at a predetermined distance from each other, for providing wear and cut-through resistance for said cylindrical tube in such a way as to maintain said high damping characteristics and radial compliance.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
23 words
A line array hose according to claim 1 wherein said long cylindrical tube material is a flexible grade of geophysical plasticized polyvinyl chloride.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
18 words
A line array hose according to claim 1 wherein said long cylindrical tube material is a thermoplastic polyurethane.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
44 words
A line array hose according to claims 2 or 3 wherein said first plurality of raised longitudinal ribs material is a stiffer grade of geophysical, plasticized polyvinyl chloride, each said raised longitudinal rib being melt-bonded to the exterior surface of said long cylindrical tube.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
96 words
A line array hose according to claim 4 wherein each of said first plurality of raised longitudinal ribs has an elliptically shaped cross section, said ribs being generally located on the exterior surface of said long cylindrical tube such that the major elipse axis of said ribs is tangent to the exterior surface and intersects the circumferential plane of said exterior surface at the focal points of said elipse, said ribs thereby being partially embedded in said hose so as to provide said wear and cut-through resistance while also providing a low drag profile during towing.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
21 words
A line array hose according to claim 5 wherein said first plurality of raised longitudinal ribs comprises a quantity of eight.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
39 words
A line array hose according to claim 5 wherein a second plurality of raised longitudinal ribs are melt-bonded to the interior circumferential surface of said long cylindrical tube for providing cut-through protection to said hose against internal array components.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
21 words
A line array hose according to claim 7 wherein said second plurality or raised longitudinal ribs comprise a quantity of eight.
