Abstract

Abstract A surface drainage culvert of the type comprising a pipe section which is cut longitudinally forming an aperture along the upper surface of the pipe and which has an upstanding grate assembly lodged within the aperture. The aperture consists of a series of longitudinally spaced slots in the pipe with unslotted pipe portions separating each slot. The grate assembly consists of a pair of spaced, parallel sidewalls which form an inlet drainage passage to accept drainage water inflow at the top of the passage and discharge the water at the bottom of the passage through the aperture into the pipe. Lateral stiffeners maintain the spacing of the top of the drainage passage, while a spacer means, situated within a guide formed in the grate assembly sidewalls, maintains the spacing of the sidewalls at the bottom of the drainage passage. In one form of the invention, the stiffeners are an integral part of the grate between the sidewalls, while in another form of the invention, the stifferers are an integral part of a top plate which is attached to the sidewalls. The drainage culvert is constructed by slotting of the pipe, fabricating the grate assembly, inserting the grate within the slots in the pipe, and then inserting the spacer means in the grate assembly to maintain the spacing of the sidewalls and lock the grate assembly within the pipe. This is a division, of application Ser. No. 284,065, filed July 16, 1981, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,365,911, issued Dec. 28, 1982 which in turn is a continuation-in-part application Ser. No. 168,309 filed 7-10-80 and now abandoned.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 181 words
A method of fabricating a surface drainage culvert of the type having a pipe section which is cut longitudinally forming an aperture along its upper surface and having an upstanding, longitudinal grate assembly received within the aperture, the method comprising the steps of: a. forming the aperture by cutting a series of longitudinally spaced slots in the pipe with unslotted pipe portions separating each said slot, b. fabricating a grate assembly comprising an apertured end face, an open end, and a pair of spaced parallel sidewalls forming between the sidewalls a longitudinal inlet drainage passage, said sidewalls further having a longitudinal guide formed adjacent the open end of the grate assembly, said guide comprising a channel in each sidewall, said channels facing one another and extending outwardly from said drainage passage, c. inserting the grate assembly within the aperture with the longitudinal guide channel walls contiguous to the outer surface of the pipe, and d. inserting spacer means in said guide channels to maintain the spacing of said sidewalls at said aperture and to lock the grate assembly within said aperture.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 42 words
The method according to claim 1 in which the pipe includes a helical seam, and the method step "a" includes the step of spacing the slots so that the helical seam crosses the aperture at the unslotted pipe portions and remains inviolate.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 38 words
The method according to claim 1 in which method step "b" includes formation of said spaced sidewalls includes joining said sidewalls at one side with stiffener means to maintain the spacing of the sidewalls at the one side.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
The method according to claim 1 in which method step "d" includes inserting said spacer means in said guide longitudinally of the pipe axis.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method according to claim 1 in which said spacer means is inserted from each end of the grate assembly.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 40 words
The method according to claim 1 in which said spacer means comprises a plurality of spreader plates, and method step "d" includes inserting said spreader plates in said guide and then rotating said plates 90° to lock said grate assembly.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 35 words
The method according to claim 1 including a final step of: e. attaching a longitudinal top plate to one edge of each of said sidewalls to maintain the spacing of said sidewalls at said edges.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 60 words
The method according to claim 1 in which method step "b" includes the step of fabricating a flange in each sidewall at said other end of the grate assembly, said flanges extending outwardly from one another, thereby forming in each sidewall a receptacle between said flange and said guide channel and for receipt of the pipe section along the aperture.
