A collagen sponge prepared by treating collagen-containing human or animal tissue with pepsin to form a pepsin-treated collagen, dialyzing said pepsin-treated collagen at a temperature in the range of 4° C. to 25° C. with a phosphate:buffered isotonic solution containing a basic amino acid at a concentration of 5 to 20 mmols/l to form a collagen solution, and heating said solution to precipitate sponge-forming collagen fibrillae therefrom.
