Abstract
Abstract An electrical machine including an armature rotatable within a housing comprised of a section of tubular ferrous material and methods for producing the housing. At least two alternate magnetic field pole pieces are secured within the housing and at least two intermediate induced pole pieces are formed by deforming the housing to provide inwardly projecting pole pieces intermediate the magnetic field pole pieces, each of the pole piece conforming to the shape of and closely embracing the armature.

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim
144 words
A method of producing a housing for an electric machine having an armature and field poles comprising the steps of: (a) selecting a section of tubular ferrous stock of suitable length and sufficient thickness to provide mechanical stability when deformed and assembled with other structural members; (b) deforming portions of the sidewalls of the selected tubular section to provide generally parallel flattened surfaces and inwardly projecting pole pieces which generally conform to the shape of the armature and are of the general size and shape required for induction effects to generate induced field poles; and (c) securing magnetic field pole pieces in alternate circumferential positions between the inwardly projecting regions to provide a housing structure wherein the inner arcurate surfaces of the magnetic field poles and the inwardly projecting pole pieces are equally spaced radially with respect to the circumferential surface of the armature.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
16 words
The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the inwardly projecting pole pieces are die formed.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
24 words
The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the flattened surfaces are stretch formed by forcing opposing curved portions of the tubular material outwardly.
Claim 5
Independent Claim
192 words
A method of producing a housing for an electric machine having an armature and field poles comprising the steps of: (a) selecting a piece of flat ferrous stock of suitable length and sufficient thickness to provide mechanical stability when deformed and assembled with other structural members; (b) deforming portions of the selected flat stock piece at predetermined locations to provide inwardly projecting pole pieces each having an inner arcurate surface which generally conform to the shape of the armature and are of the general size and shape required for induction effects to generate induced field poles; (c) rolling the flat stock piece to form a tubular housing having abutting edges and curved sectors located intermediate to and at a larger diameter than the inwardly projecting poles to receive magnetic pole pieces having inner arcurate surfaces; (d) bonding the abutting edges together; and (e) securing magnetic field pole pieces in the curved sectors between the inwardly projecting pole pieces to provide a housing structure wherein the inner arcurate surfaces of the magnetic field poles and the inwardly projecting pole pieces are equally spaced radially with respect to the circumferential surface of the armature.
Claim 6
Independent Claim

Claim 7
Dependent Claim
35 words
The method as recited in claim 4 wherein the piece of flat ferrous stock is first rolled to form the curved sectors and then the inwardly projected pole pieces formed intermediate to the curved sectors.
