A gas detection apparatus for detecting, in a gaseous medium, at least one sample gas, said medium having a plurality of characteristic absorption wavelengths of interest, comprising: means for filtering a beam of electromagnetic radiation including radiation at at least two said characteristic wavelengths to produce a sequence of single component beams at successive ones of said plurality of characteristic wavelengths, said filtering means having a rotatable planar element having a varying narrow bandwidth filtering characteristic arranged in a predetermined manner; and means for selectively moving said element relative to said radiation beam to position said respective filtering characteristics in the path of said radiation beam; beam-forming means supported in the path of said filtered beam for providing a first and a second component beam whose intensities vary 180° out of phase with each other, a sample gas holding chamber having a first optical path passing therethrough positioned in the path of one of said first and second components for passing one said component through said sample chamber along the sample chamber optical path passing therethrough, a reference gas holding chamber having a second optical path passing therethrough positioned in the path of the other of said first and second components for passing said other component through said reference chamber along the reference chamber optical path passing therethrough, means for combining said first and second components after passage through said sample gas holding chamber and said reference gas holding chamber for providing a time sequential detection signal characteristic of said gas medium at said successive filter frequencies.
