Abstract

Abstract A primary cell of high specific energy in which the anode active material (16) is an alkali metal and the cathode active material is sulphur oxychloride which simultaneously acts as an electrolyte solvent, said electrolyte further containing a dissolved salt and a co-solvent. The co-solvent is chosen from among phosphoryl chloride and benzoyl chloride; the dissolved salt is lithium tetrachloroaluminate.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 109 words
A cell of high specific energy in which the anode active material is an alkali metal and the cathode active material is sulphur oxychloride which simultaneously acts as an electrolyte solvent, said electrolyte further containing a dissolved salt and a co-solvent whose reduction potential relative to said alkali metal is less than the reduction potential of sulphur dioxide, wherein the proportions (by volume) of the co-solvent relative to the solvent and co-solvent mixture lie between 32% and 43%, so as to obtain, in the discharge curves (voltage as a function of the discharge capacity) a second perceptible discharge plateau at the level of the reduction potential of sulphur dioxide.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 109 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 12 words
A cell according to claim 1, wherein the alkali metal is lithium.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 14 words
A cell according to claim 1, wherein the proportion of the co-solvent is 40%.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 12 words
A cell according to claim 1, wherein said solvent is thionyl chloride.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 12 words
A cell according to claim 1, wherein said solvent is sulphuryl chloride.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 12 words
A cell according to claim 1, wherein said co-solvent is phosphoryl chloride.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 12 words
A cell according to claim 1, wherein said co-solvent is benzoyl chloride.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 24 words
A cell according to claim 1, wherein said dissolved salt is chosen from the group including lithium tetrachloroaluminate and lithium hexachloroantimoniate (SbCl 6 Li).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 24 words
A primary cell according to claim 7, wherein the dissolved salt is lithium tetrachloroaluminate at a concentration of 0.8 to 1.5 moles per liter.
