Abstract

Abstract A solvent composition comprising 1,1,1-trichloroethane and a stabilizing amount of an epoxide of formula ##STR1## wherein R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, phenyl or benzyl, R 3 is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R 4 is alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and n is 0 or 1. Preferably the or each alkyl group contains 1 or 2 carbon atoms; examples of useful epoxides are ethyl trans-2,3-epoxybutyrate, ethyl 3,4-epoxy-3-methylvalerate and ethyl beta-methyl-beta-phenylglycidate.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 105 words
A solvent composition comprising 1,1,1-trichloroethane and a stabilising amount ranging from 0.05% to 5% by weight based on the weight of 1,1,1-trichloroethane of a stabilising agent, characterized in that the stabilising agent is an epoxide of the formula. ##STR3## wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 , which may be the same or different, represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and wherein R 1 or R 2 may also be a phenyl group or a benzyl group, n is 0 or 1, and R 4 is an alkyl group having 1 to 2 carbon atoms.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 105 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
A solvent composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein in the stabilising agent the alkyl group represented by and any of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 contains 1 or 2 carbon atoms.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 33 words
A solvent composition as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein in the stabilising agent, R 1 and R 4 are alkyl groups and R 2 and R 3 are hydrogen atoms.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 34 words
A solvent composition as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein in the stabilising agent, R 1 , R 3 and R 4 are alkyl groups and R 2 is a hydrogen atom.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 37 words
A solvent composition as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein in the stabilising agent, R 1 and R 4 are alkyl groups, R 3 is a hydrogen atom and R 2 is a phenyl group.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 15 words
A solvent composition as claimed in claim 3 wherein the stabilising agent is ethyl trans-2,3-epoxybutyrate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
A solvent composition as claimed in claim 4 wherein the stabilising agent is ethyl 3,4-epoxy-3-methylvalerate.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 15 words
A solvent composition as claimed in claim 5 wherein the stabilising agent is ethyl beta-methyl-beta-phenylglycidate.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 22 words
A solvent composition as claimed in any one of the preceding claims which contains one or more additional stabilising agents for 1,1,1-trichloroethane.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 32 words
A solvent composition as claimed in claim 9 wherein the amount of the or each additional stabilising agent is not greater than 3% by weight based on the weight of the 1,1,1-trichloroethane.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 35 words
