Abstract

Abstract This invention is concerned with reducing the operating temperature and increasing the output of a solar cell. A solar cell (10) constructed in accordance with the invention carries electrodes (22) in a grid finger pattern on its back surface (12). These electrodes are sintered at the proper temperature to provide good ohmic contact. After sintering, a reflective material (24) is deposited on the back surface by vacuum evaporation. Thus, the application of the back surface reflector is separate from the back contact formation. Back surface reflectors formed in conjunction with separate grid finger configuration back contacts are more effective than those formed by full back metallization of the reflector material.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 86 words
In a method of making a solar cell of the type having a back surface reflector, the improvement comprising depositing a plurality of electrodes comprising a first metal material in a grid finger pattern on the back surface of said solar cell, sintering said grid finger pattern of electrodes to provide good ohmic contact with said back surface, and applying a second, different metal reflective material to said back surface in the spaces between the grid fingers forming the electrodes to form said back surface reflector.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 86 words
In a method of making a solar cell of the type having a back surface reflector, the improvement comprising depositing a plurality of electrodes comprising a first metal material in a grid finger pattern on the back surface of said solar cell, sintering said grid finger pattern of electrodes to provide good ohmic contact with said back surface, and applying a second, different metal reflective material to said back surface in the spaces between the grid fingers forming the electrodes to form said back surface reflector.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 28 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 including the step of selecting the reflective material of a metal from the group consisting of aluminum, copper, gold, and silver.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 16 words
A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein the selected metal is applied by vacuum evaporation.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method as claimed in claim 3 wherein the reflective metal is vacuum evaporated to a thickness of about 1500 Angstrom units.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 21 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 including the step of polishing the back surface prior to depositing the electrodes thereon.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 76 words
In a solar cell of the type comprising a wafer of photovoltaic material having a front surface for receiving light and an oppositely disposed back surface, the improvement comprising a plurality of electrodes of a first metal material having a finger pattern in good ohmic contact with said back surface, and a layer of a second different metal reflective material covering said back surface in the spaces between said electrodes thereby forming a back surface reflector.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 76 words
In a solar cell of the type comprising a wafer of photovoltaic material having a front surface for receiving light and an oppositely disposed back surface, the improvement comprising a plurality of electrodes of a first metal material having a finger pattern in good ohmic contact with said back surface, and a layer of a second different metal reflective material covering said back surface in the spaces between said electrodes thereby forming a back surface reflector.
