Abstract
Abstract A reinforced tubular structure comprising a metal tube and a cured composite tubular liner which increases the longitudinal stiffness of the tubular structure, the liner being adhesively bonded to the inner peripheral surface of the metal tube. The reinforced tubular structure is fabricated by forming a laminate of the composite material, wrapping it around a flexible mandrel, inserting the mandrel and wrapped laminate into the metal tube, and co-curing the laminate to the inner peripheral surface of the tube.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
147 words
A method of forming a reinforced tubular structure comprising: forming a laminate of a plurality of plies of fibrous material in an uncured resin matrix, the laminate having two opposed principal surfaces, the shape of the principal surfaces being substantially trapezoidal; wrapping the laminate around a flexible mandrel such that the laminate is formed into a variable thickness tube tapering from the middle to the ends thereof; inserting the flexible mandrel into a metal tube, the metal tube having inner and outer peripheral surfaces; and co-curing the laminate to the inner peripheral surface of the metal tube such that the laminate is bonded to the inner peripheral surface of the metal tube across a plurality of windings of the laminate, said flexible mandrel being expanded during said co-curing such that the laminate is compressed between the flexible mandrel and the inner peripheral surface of the metal tube.

The method of claim 2 wherein the fibers of the fibrous material are disposed within the laminate such that the majority of fibers will be aligned substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the metal tube after co-curing.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
35 words
The method of claim 3 also including the steps of applying a primer to the inner peripheral surface of the metal tube, and applying an adhesive coating to the outer surface of the wrapped laminate.
Claim 6
