Abstract

Abstract This invention is directed to a method for preparing foam inhibitors for aqueous systems, which comprises the steps of: (a) mixing a higher-molecular branched-chain primary alcohol or from about 18 to 30 carbon atoms with hydrophobic colloidal silica in an alcohol to silica ratio of from about 100:2 to 100:20; (b) heating the mixture from step (a) under stirring to temperatures of from about 100° to 240° C.; and (c) allowing the heated mixture from step (b) to cool to room temperature. This invention is also directed to the suds regulators prepared and their use in aqueous detergent systems.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 77 words
A method for preparing foam inhibitors for aqueous systems, which comprises the steps of: (a) mixing a higher-molecular branched-chain primary alcohol of from about 18 to 30 carbon atoms with hydrophobic collodial silica in an alcohol to silica ratio of from about 100:2 to 100:20; (b) heating the mixture from step (a) under stirring to temperatures of from about 100° to 240° C.; and (c) allowing the heated mixture from step (b) to cool to room temperature.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 77 words
A method for preparing foam inhibitors for aqueous systems, which comprises the steps of: (a) mixing a higher-molecular branched-chain primary alcohol of from about 18 to 30 carbon atoms with hydrophobic collodial silica in an alcohol to silica ratio of from about 100:2 to 100:20; (b) heating the mixture from step (a) under stirring to temperatures of from about 100° to 240° C.; and (c) allowing the heated mixture from step (b) to cool to room temperature.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the alcohol to silica ratio in step (a) is from about 100:3 to 100:10.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 25 words
The method of claim 1, wherein in step (b) the mixture is heated under an inert gas atmosphere for from about 1 to 5 hours.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 45 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the primary alcohol in step (a) is a Guerbet alcohol of the formula ##STR2## wherein R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different, are each an alkyl of from 4 to 16 carbon atoms.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 4, wherein the Guerbet alcohol is liquid at room temperature.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 14 words
The method of claims 1 or 4, wherein the alcohol consists substantially of 2-octyldecanol.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 23 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the mixture of alcohol and silica in step (a) is homogenized prior to heating in step (b).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 8 words
A foam inhibitor prepared according to claim 1.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method of regulating suds in aqueous detergent systems which comprises incorporating into the detergent an effective amount of a foam inhibitor of claim 8 before dilution to produce said aqueous detergent system.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 24 words
The method of claim 9, wherein from about 0.01 to 1 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the detergent, is incorporated.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 24 words
The method of claim 10, wherein from about 0.05 to 0.2 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the detergent, is incorporated.
