A process according to claim 1, wherein said polyphenylene oxide is prepared by oxidation polymerization of a phenol compound represented by the general formula, ##STR3## (wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , and R 5 are each hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a hydrocarbon radical, or a substituted hydrocarbon radical and at least one of R 1 to R 5 is hydrogen atom).
