Abstract

Abstract A means for aligning components of an optical system without the use of conventional optical equipment is disclosed. This means includes the use of a pair of electrodes in proximity with the light guiding portion of a pyroelectric system element. The absorption of light in the waveguide produces a current in the pyroelectric material that is monitored at the electrodes. Alignment of the system components is achieved by adjusting their relative position to increase the monitored signal.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 110 words
A process for aligning an optical component having an output of electromagnetic radiation with a wavepath that comprises a pyroelectric material and that is capable of guiding said electromagnetic radiation, comprising the steps of modulating said output of electromagnetic radiation, directing said output of electromagnetic radiation onto said wavepath, guiding at least a portion of said electromagnetic radiation through said wavepath monitoring a similarly modulating current produced at electrodes in proximity to said wavepath due to a change in dielectric polarization in said pyroelectric material induced by said guiding of said electromagnetic radiation, and adjusting the relative position of said optical component to said pyroelectric material to increase said current.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 110 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 13 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said optical component is an optical fiber.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said electrodes are within 100 μm of said wavepath.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 21 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said pyroelectric material is chosen from the group consisting of lithium niobate and lithium tantalate.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said electromagnetic radiation is modulated at a rate in the range 10 Hz to 1 MHz.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
The process of claim 5 wherein said electromagnetic radiation is modulated at a rate in the range 1 KHz to 1 MHz.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 20 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said electrode is at least 1 mm from a boundary of said pyroelectric material.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 16 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the length of said electrodes is greater than 50 μm.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 20 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the width of said electrodes is in the range 10 μm to 100 μm.
