Abstract
Abstract A process for preparing a supported molybdenum carbide composition which comprises impregnating a porous support with a solution of molybdic acid dissolved in aqueous ammonium hydroxide, drying the impregnated support and then heating in a carbiding atmosphere at a temperature of about 650 DEG -750 DEG C.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
114 words
A process for preparing a supported molybdenum carbide composition which comprises impregnating a porous, inert support with a solution of molybdic acid dissolved in aqueous ammonium hydroxide, heating the impregnated support in order to dry said support and subsequently heating the impregnated support to a temperature ranging from about 650° C. to about 750° C. in a carbiding gas mixture which comprises hydrogen in a concentration ranging from about 1 to about 20 percent by volume, a carbiding component selected from the group consisting of lower alkane, lower alkene, carbon monoxide and mixtures thereof in a concentration ranging from about 0.5 to about 5 percent by volume and the balance being a noble gas.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
30 words
The process of claim 1 wherein, prior to heating the impregnated support in the carbiding gas mixture, the impregnated support is calcined at temperatures ranging up to about 700° C.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
23 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the alkane and/or alkene is selected from the group consisting of methane, ethane, propane, ethylene, and propylene.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
10 words
The process of claim 3 wherein the alkane is methane.
