Abstract

Abstract This invention relates to conversion processes which take place in the presence of solid acid catalysts, e.g., hydrocarbon conversion processes. More specifically, this invention relates to a liquid phase process for the alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons, with olefin, e.g., ethylene, propylene, etc., in the presence of a polyfluorosulfonic acid catalyst.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 45 words
A liquid phase process for the alkylation of an aromatic hydrocarbon with an olefin which comprises contacting said aromatic hydrocarbon and said olefin, at reaction conditions, in the presence of a copolymer of a perfluorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene containing pendant sulfonic acid groups, as catalyst.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 45 words
A liquid phase process for the alkylation of an aromatic hydrocarbon with an olefin which comprises contacting said aromatic hydrocarbon and said olefin, at reaction conditions, in the presence of a copolymer of a perfluorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene containing pendant sulfonic acid groups, as catalyst.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 54 words
A liquid phase process for the preparation of ethylbenzene which comprises contacting an ethylene feed stream with a benzene feed stream at a reaction temperature of between about 50° and about 200° C. in the presence of an unsupported catalyst comprising a copolymer of a perfluorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene containing pendant sulfonic acid groups.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 54 words
A liquid phase process for the preparation of ethylbenzene which comprises contacting an ethylene feed stream with a benzene feed stream at a reaction temperature of between about 50° and about 200° C. in the presence of an unsupported catalyst comprising a copolymer of a perfluorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene containing pendant sulfonic acid groups.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
A process according to claim 2 wherein the mole ratio of said benzene stream to said ethylene stream varies from about 1.5:1 to about 10:1.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 40 words
A process according to claim 2 wherein the weight hourly space velocity, defined as the weight per hour of the reactants divided by the weight of the catalyst employed varies from between about 0.5 to about 20.0 hr -1 .
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 54 words
A liquid phase process for the preparation of ethylbenzene which comprises contacting an ethylene feed stream with a benzene feed stream at a reaction temperature of between about 0° and about 200° C. in the presence of an unsupported catalyst comprising a copolymer of a perfluorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene containing pendant sulfonic acid groups.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 54 words
A liquid phase process for the preparation of ethylbenzene which comprises contacting an ethylene feed stream with a benzene feed stream at a reaction temperature of between about 0° and about 200° C. in the presence of an unsupported catalyst comprising a copolymer of a perfluorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene containing pendant sulfonic acid groups.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 25 words
A process according to claim 5 wherein the mole ratio of said benzene stream to said ethylene stream varies from about 1.5:1 to about 10:1.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 40 words
A process according to claim 5 wherein the weight hourly space velocity, defined as the weight per hour of the reactants divided by the weight of the catalyst employed varies from between about 0.5 to about 20.0 hr -1 .
