Abstract

Abstract Anthranilic acid has been anchored to polystyrene, and rhodium, palladium, platinum and ruthenium complexes of this modified polystyrene have been prepared. These catalysts will reduce a variety of olefinic and aromatic hydrocarbons, and also nitrile, nitro and carbonyl functional groups, said carbonyl groups being present in either ketones or aldehydes.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 76 words
A process for the catalytic hydrogenation of organic compounds which comprises reacting said compounds with hydrogen in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst consisting essentially of anthranilic acid complexed with a member selected from the group consisting of rhodium, ruthenium, palladium and platinum, said anthranilic acid complex being chemically linked through the amino group thereof to a polymeric support having reactive sites thereon for effecting the chemical linkage between the anthranilic acid complex and said polymer.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 76 words
A process for the catalytic hydrogenation of organic compounds which comprises reacting said compounds with hydrogen in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst consisting essentially of anthranilic acid complexed with a member selected from the group consisting of rhodium, ruthenium, palladium and platinum, said anthranilic acid complex being chemically linked through the amino group thereof to a polymeric support having reactive sites thereon for effecting the chemical linkage between the anthranilic acid complex and said polymer.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 28 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the hydrogenation is carried out at a pressure in the range of about 1 to 3 atmospheres and at about room temperature.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 16 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the organic compound to be hydrogenated is an aromatic compound.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the organic compound to be hydrogenated is benzene.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the organic compound to be hydrogenated is cyclohexene.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 12 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the polymeric support is chloromethylated polystyrene.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 17 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the reactive site on said polymeric support is --CH 2 Cl.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 13 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the anthranilic acid is complexed with rhodium.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 13 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the anthranilic acid is complexed with palladium.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 20 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the organic compound to be hydrogenated contains sterically unhindered carbon-to-carbon double or triple bonds.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the organic compound to be hydrogenated contains nitro, carbonyl or nitrile groups.
