Abstract

Abstract In a borehole acoustic telemetry system for acoustically transmitting data over a pipe suspended in a borehole, the level of noise in the data stream is inherently high, making the use of precise frequencies advantageous to provide useful data. A first transmitter in the system operates at a precise frequency to transmit a signal over the pipe where it is received by a receive and retransmit circuit path. Components in the receive and retransmit section filter and amplify a data component of the signal and retransmit the data signal at a precise frequency. Crystal controlled oscillator clocks are operated in the system at a same frequency in the transmitter and receiver-retransmitter to insure precise frequency control of the system.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 146 words
In an acoustic telemetry system including a first transmitter clocked by a first crystal controlled oscillator for transmitting an acoustic signal at a first frequency over an elongated column acting as an acoustic path in the borehole, such acoustic signal having a data component embedded in a noise background, circuit means forming a circuit path to receive, and retransmit said acoustic signal, which means comprises: AGC means for amplifying the received acoustic signal; filter means for filtering noise from said received acoustic signals to provide a clean data component; feedback means for passing the signal to said AGC means for controlling the AGC gain; means for retransmitting the received signal at a frequency other than the first frequency; clock means having a second crystal controlled oscillator for operating said retransmitting means, said first and second crystal controlled oscillators being operated at substantially the same precise frequency.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 146 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 38 words
The apparatus of claim 1 and further including means for comparing the timing of said clean data component and a signal generated by said second crystal controlled oscillator for providing a bit rate clock for said retransmitting means.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 48 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said comparing means includes means for integrating said data component of said acoustic signal and including a precise time window and means controlled by said integrated signal when compared to the second oscillator signal for shifting said time window a small increment.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 47 words
The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said filter means includes first filter means having a plurality of stages for comparing the precise frequency at which said first transmitter is operating with the frequencies in said acoustic signal and for rejecting frequencies other than substantially said precise frequency.
