Abstract

Abstract An agar gel topical dressing for coating a burn area or other area of skin impairment is prepared by heating and agitating a mixture of agar, diethylene glycol and water to solubilize the agar. The resulting solution, upon cooling to its gelation temperature, is converted to a thermally reversible agar gel. Application of the agar gel as a burn coating is undertaken by heating the gel to obtain a sol, applying the sol to the burn area at a tissue compatible temperature, and allowing the sol to cool and set in the form of a gel.
