Methyl-substituted polyphenylcarboxylic acids

Claim 2

A methyl-substituted polyphenyl compound of the structural formula ##STR9## wherein n is a whole number from 2 to 3 inclusive, Y is selected from the class consisting of methyl acylhalide and --COOR, R is hydrogen or a monovalent alkyl group of 1 to 24 carbon atoms, when Y is methyl, each X is methyl and when Y is --COOR, each X is selected from the class consisting of methyl and --COOR.

Claim 3

The compound of claim 1 wherein Y is methyl.

Claim 4

The compound of claim 1 wherein Y comprises a --COOR group and X comprises methyl groups.

Claim 5

The compound of claim 1 wherein X and Y comprise --COOR groups.

Claim 6

The compound of claim 1 wherein said R comprises methyl groups.

Claim 7

The compound of claim 2 which comprises 2,2',2",4,4',6,6',6"-octamethyl-m-terphenyl-4"-acyl compounds.

Claim 8

The compound of claim 2 which comprises 2,2',2",2"',4,4',4",6,6',6",6"'-undecamethyl-m-quaterphenyl-4"'-acyl compound.

Claim 9

The compound of claim 3 which comprises 2,2',2",4',6,6',6"-heptamethyl-m-terphenyl-4,4'-diacyl compound.

Claim 10

The compound of claim 3 which comprises 2,2',2",2"',4',4",6,6',6",6"'-decamethyl-m-quaterphenyl-4,4"'diacyl compound.

Claim 11

A process for producing methyl-substituted polyphenyl compounds of the structural formula ##STR10## wherein n is a whole number from 1 to 3, Y is selected from the class consisting of methyl groups acylhalide and -COOH, which comprises oxidizing at least one para methyl group of a polymesityl wherein said process is carried out using cobaltic catalyst at a temperature within the range of from 20° to 150° in acetic acid medium.

Claim 12

A process for producing methyl-substituted polyphenyl compounds of the structural formula ##STR10## wherein n is a whole number from 1 to 3, Y is selected from the class consisting of methyl groups acylhalide and -COOH, which comprises oxidizing at least one para methyl group of a polymesityl wherein said process is carried out using cobaltic catalyst at a temperature within the range of from 20° to 150° in acetic acid medium.

Claim 13

A resinous polymer of a methyl-substituted polyphenylcarboxylic acid compound wherein the said polymer has the structural formula ##STR11## wherein n comprises a whole number from 1 to 3 inclusive, L is ##STR12## Z is selected from the group consisting of divalent aliphatic moieties and divalent aromatic moieties, m is a number of recurring units wherein the said resinous polymer has an inherent viscosity of at least 0.20 dl/g in a 60/40 phenol-tetrachloroethane solvent at 30° C.

Claim 14

A resinous polymer of a methyl-substituted polyphenylcarboxylic acid compound wherein the said polymer has the structural formula ##STR11## wherein n comprises a whole number from 1 to 3 inclusive, L is ##STR12## Z is selected from the group consisting of divalent aliphatic moieties and divalent aromatic moieties, m is a number of recurring units wherein the said resinous polymer has an inherent viscosity of at least 0.20 dl/g in a 60/40 phenol-tetrachloroethane solvent at 30° C.

Claim 15

The polymer of claim 11 wherein the said divalent aliphatic moiety comprises an alkylene group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms in the alkylene chain.

Claim 16

The polymer of claim 11 wherein said divalent aromatic moieties are selected from the group consisting of phenylene, biphenylene, diphenylene ether, diphenylenemethane, diphenylenesulfone, diphenylenesulfide, naphthylene, phenanthrylene and anthrylene moieties.

Claim 17

The polymer of claim 13 wherein said aromatic moieties comprise substituted moieties, said substitutions selected from the group of radicals consisting of lower alkyls, halogens, and nitro radicals.

Claim 18

The polymer of claim 11 wherein the said acid comprises 2,2',6,6'-tetramethylbiphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid.

Claim 19

The polymer of claim 15 wherein Z comprises ethylene.

Claim 20

The polymer of claim 15 wherein Z comprises butylene.

The polymer of claim 15 wherein LZL is ##STR13##

Claim 22

The polymer of claim 15 wherein LZL is ##STR14##

Claim 23

The resinous polymer of claim 11 wherein the said polymer comprises a polyamide of a methyl-substituted polyphenylcarboxylic acid compound and a compound selected from the group consisting of a polyamine, a polyisocyanate and a polyisothiocyanate.
