Abstract

Abstract Metal containers suitable for packaging beer and other beverages have as the internal sanitary liner a film of a water-based coating composition prepared by dissolving or dispersing in aqueous medium an at least partially neutralized reaction product of a polyepoxide having a 1,2-epoxy equivalency greater than 1.0 and an amino acid containing at least one amine group and at least one carboxyl group, wherein the amine groups of the amino acid are preferentially reactive with the epoxy groups of the polyepoxide, and a curing or cross-linking agent. These compositions provide containers with cured liners which do not impart undesirable turbidity or taste characteristics to the beer, soft drinks or fruit juices packaged therein.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 135 words
A metal container having an internal surface coated with a cured layer of a water-based coating composition comprising an aqueous medium having dissolved or dispersed therein: (a) an at least partially base neutralized reaction product of: (1) a polyepoxide having a 1,2-epoxy equivalency of greater than 1.0, and (2) an aromatic amino acid containing at least one amine group and at least one carboxyl group, in which the amine group and the carboxyl group are both attached to the aromatic ring, wherein the amine groups of said amino acid are preferentially reactive with the epoxy groups of said polyepoxide; said reaction product having unreacted carboxyl groups which are neutralized with a base; and (b) from about 3 to about 30 percent by weight based on the weight of (a) and (b) of a curing agent.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 135 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
The container of claim 1 wherein said reaction product is at least partially neutralized with a volatile base.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 12 words
The container of claim 2 wherein said volatile base is an amine.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
The container of claim 1 wherein said aqueous medium of said water-based coating contains at least 60 percent by weight of water.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 19 words
The container of claim 1 wherein said polyepoxide of said reaction product is a polyglycidyl ether of a polyphenol.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 11 words
The container of claim 4 wherein said polyphenol is bisphenol A.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 18 words
The container of claim 1 wherein said aromatic amino acid is anthranilic acid, p-aminobenzoic acid or m-aminobenzoic acid.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 22 words
The container of claim 1 wherein said curing agent is an aminoplast resin, a phenolic resin or a blocked or non-blocked polyisocyanate.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 15 words
The container of claim 1 further containing a beverage in contact with said cured layer.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 20 words
The container of claim 8 wherein said beverage is beer, a carbonated or uncarbonated soft drink or a fruit juice.
