Bleaching process and compositions

Claim 2

A bleaching composition consisting essentially of: (a) from about 1% to about 70% by weight of a peroxygen bleaching compound selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide, urea peroxide, and alkali metal peroxides, perborates, percarbonates, and perphosphates, and mixtures thereof; and (b) from about 1% to about 90% by weight of a bleach activator compound of the formula ##STR16## wherein R is a hydrocarbyl group containing from about 5 to about 13 carbon atoms and additionally containing from 0 to about 10 ethylene oxide groups, provided that when R contains greater than about 9 carbon atoms it must contain at least 2 ethylene groups, R 1 is a hydrocarbyl group containing from about 4 to about 24 carbon atoms and additionally containing from 0 to about 10 ethylene oxide groups, provided that when R 1 contains greater than about 12 carbon atoms it must contain at least 2 ethylene oxide groups, and each Z is a leaving group, having a pKa of from about 5 to about 20 and a molecular weight of less than about 175, selected from the group consisting of: (1) enols of the formula ##STR17## (2) carbon acids of the formula ##STR18## wherein each R 2 is a C 1 -C 9 alkyl group, each R 3 is hydrogen or a C 1 -C 8 alkyl group, and each X is ##STR19##

Claim 3

A composition according to claim 1 wherein the peroxygen bleaching compound is selected from the group consisting of sodium perborate monohydrate, sodium perborate tetrahydrate, sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate, sodium pyrophosphate peroxyhydrate, urea peroxyhydrate, sodium peroxide, and mixtures thereof.

Claim 4

A composition according to claim 2 wherein the peroxygen bleaching compound is sodium perborate monohydrate, sodium perborate tetrahydrate, or mixtures thereof.

Claim 5

A composition according to claim 1 wherein, in the bleach activator compound, R and R 1 each contain about 11 or fewer carbon atoms and additionally contain from 0 to about 5 ethylene oxide groups.

Claim 6

A composition according to claim 4 wherein R and R 1 are each hydrocarbyl groups containing about 9 or fewer carbon atoms.

Claim 7

A composition according to claim 1 wherein the bleach activator compound has the formula ##STR20##

Claim 8

A composition according to claim 6 wherein, in the bleach activator compound, Z is an enol.

Claim 9

A composition according to claim 7 wherein the bleach activator compound is isopropenyl hexanoate.

Claim 10

A composition according to claim 6 wherein, in the bleach activator compound, Z is a carbon acid and each X is ##STR21##

Claim 11

A composition according to claim 9 wherein the bleach activator compound is hexanoyl malonic acid, diethyl ester.

Claim 12

A composition according to claims 6, 8 or 10 wherein the peroxygen bleaching compound is selected from the group consisting of sodium perborate monohydrate, sodium perborate tetrahydrate, sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate, sodium pyrophosphate peroxyhydrate, urea peroxyhydrate, sodium peroxide, and mixtures thereof.

Claim 13

A composition according to claim 11 wherein the peroxygen bleaching compound is sodium perborate monohydrate, sodium perborate tetrahydrate, or mixtures thereof.

Claim 14

A composition according to claim 1 further containing from about 1% to about 60% by weight of a nonionic, ampholytic, or zwitterionic surfactant, or mixtures thereof, or mixtures thereof with cationic surfactants.

Claim 15

A composition according to claim 13 wherein the surfactant is a nonionic surfactant.

Claim 16

A composition according to claim 14 wherein the peroxygen bleaching compound is selected from the group consisting of sodium perborate monohydrate, sodium perborate tetrahydrate, sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate, sodium pyrophosphate peroxyhydrate, urea peroxyhydrate, sodium peroxide, and mixtures thereof and the bleach activator compound has the formula ##STR22##

Claim 17

A composition according to claims 1, 13 or 15 further containing from about 1% to about 85% by weight of a buffering agent selected from the group consisting of alkali metal phosphates, carbonates, bicarbonates, silicates, and mixtures thereof.

Claim 18

A process for bleaching textile materials consisting essentially of contacting said textile materials with an aqueous solution of the composition of claims 1, 13 or 15 at a solution pH of from about 7 to about 12.

Claim 19

A detergent composition consisting essentially of from about 1% to about 50% by weight of an anionic, cationic, nonionic, ampholytic or zwitterionic surfactant, or mixtures thereof, from about 1% to about 60% by weight of a detergent builder material, and from about 1% to about 50% by weight of a bleaching composition consisting essentially of: (a) from about 1% to about 70% by weight of a peroxygen bleaching compound selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide, urea peroxide, and alkali metal peroxides, perborates, percarbonates, and perphosphates, and mixtures thereof; and (b) from about 1% to about 90% by weight of a bleach activator compound of the formula ##STR23## wherein R is a hydrocarbyl group containing from about 5 to about 13 carbon atoms and additionally containing from 0 to about 10 ethylene oxide groups, provided that when R contains greater than about 9 carbon atoms it must contain at least 2 ethylene oxide groups, R 1 is a hydrocarbyl group containing from about 4 to about 24 carbon atoms and additionally containing from 0 to about 20 ethylene oxide groups, provided that when R 1 contains greater than about 12 carbon atoms it must contain at least 2 ethylene oxide goups, and each Z is a leaving group, having a pKa of from about 5 to about 20 and a molecular weight of less than about 175, selected from the group consisting of: (1) enols of the formula ##STR24## (2) carbon acids of the formula ##STR25## wherein each R 2 is a C 1 -C 9 alkyl group, each R 3 is hydrogen or a C 1 -C 8 alkyl group, and each X is ##STR26##

Claim 20

A detergent composition consisting essentially of from about 1% to about 50% by weight of an anionic, cationic, nonionic, ampholytic or zwitterionic surfactant, or mixtures thereof, from about 1% to about 60% by weight of a detergent builder material, and from about 1% to about 50% by weight of a bleaching composition consisting essentially of: (a) from about 1% to about 70% by weight of a peroxygen bleaching compound selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide, urea peroxide, and alkali metal peroxides, perborates, percarbonates, and perphosphates, and mixtures thereof; and (b) from about 1% to about 90% by weight of a bleach activator compound of the formula ##STR23## wherein R is a hydrocarbyl group containing from about 5 to about 13 carbon atoms and additionally containing from 0 to about 10 ethylene oxide groups, provided that when R contains greater than about 9 carbon atoms it must contain at least 2 ethylene oxide groups, R 1 is a hydrocarbyl group containing from about 4 to about 24 carbon atoms and additionally containing from 0 to about 20 ethylene oxide groups, provided that when R 1 contains greater than about 12 carbon atoms it must contain at least 2 ethylene oxide goups, and each Z is a leaving group, having a pKa of from about 5 to about 20 and a molecular weight of less than about 175, selected from the group consisting of: (1) enols of the formula ##STR24## (2) carbon acids of the formula ##STR25## wherein each R 2 is a C 1 -C 9 alkyl group, each R 3 is hydrogen or a C 1 -C 8 alkyl group, and each X is ##STR26##

Claim 21

A composition according to claim 18 wherein the peroxygen bleaching compound is selected from the group consisting of sodium perborate monohydrate, sodium perborate tetrahydrate, sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate, sodium pyrophosphate peroxyhydrate, urea peroxyhydrate, sodium peroxide, and mixtures thereof and the bleach activator compound has the formula ##STR27##
