Abstract
Abstract An internal combustion engine is run at high compression ratios by always starting the compression of the charge at sub-atmospheric pressure, thus allowing high compression ratios without excessive pressure at the end of the compression stroke. Higher compression ratios allow higher expansion ratios and increased efficiency. The method is suitable for use with both spark ignition and compression ignition internal combustion engines.
