Abstract

Abstract A method of producing cross-linked unsaturated polyesters from a solution of a linear unsaturated polyester in a cross-linking agent, wherein a reaction medium comprising said solution and containing free hydroxyl radicals is brought in contact, at room temperature and under atmospheric pressure, with at least one hydrolyzable chlorine-containing derivative in an amount from 0.1 to 10% by weight, based on said solution.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 127 words
A method of producing a cured foamed product from a solution of a linear unsaturated polyester in a cross-linking agent, said method comprising the step of contacting a reaction medium comprising said solution and a free radical initiator and containing free hydroxyl radicals at room temperature and under atmospheric pressure, with at least one foaming agent and with at least one totally hydrolyzable chlorine-containing derivative in an amount from 1 to 10% by weight, based on said solution, said chlorine-containing derivative comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of phosphorous chloride, phosphorous oxychloride, silicon chloride, and an acid chloride selected from acetyl chloride and benzoyl chloride, whereby said method produces said cured foamed product in a one-stage process without the external application of heat.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 17 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said reaction medium contains at least one inert mineral filler.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method according to claim 2, wherein said inert mineral filler comprises finely divided carbonate.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 150 words
A method of producing a cured foamed product from a solution of a linear unsaturated polyester in a cross-linking agent, comprising the step of contacting, at room temperature and under atmospheric pressure, a reaction medium comprising said solution, a finely-divided carbonate filler, and a free radical initiator, and containing free hydroxyl radicals with at least one totally hydrolyzable chlorine-containing derivative in an amount of from 1 to 10% by weight, based on said solution, said chlorine-containing derivative being selected from the group consisting of phosphorous chloride, phosphorous oxychloride, silicon chloride, and an acid chloride selected from the group consisting of acetyl chloride and benzoyl chloride whereby said cured foamed product is produced in a one-stage process without external application of heat, and whereby foaming occurs by virtue of the in situ generation of carbon dioxide gas from the reaction of said filler with the hydrolysis product of said chlorine-containing derivative.
Claim 6
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
A method according to claim 3 or 4, wherein said carbonate comprises at least one of magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate and ammonium carbonate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
A method according to claim 2 or 4, wherein the ratio of said inert mineral filler to non-filler organic material is between 30/70 and 55/45 by weight.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method according to claim 1 or 4, wherein the chlorine-containing derivative is added to the reaction medium in admixture with a liquid foaming agent.
