Abstract

Abstract Certain metals, and especially uranium, are recovered from an organic solvent by stripping with an aqueous solution containing polymeric phosphates under conditions in which the polymeric phosphate does not quickly hydrolize and metal preferentially dissolves in the aqueous solution. The metal may then be recovered from the aqueous solution by hydrolizing the polymeric phosphates and either precipitating the metal or reextracting the metal at higher concentrations with an organic solvent containing extractants.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 83 words
A process of stripping uranium from an organic solution containing an organic extractant and said uranium which comprises: (a) contacting said organic solution with an aqueous solution of an inorganic polymeric phosphoric acid or salt thereof under conditions in which the inorganic polymeric phosphoric acid or salt thereof does not rapidly hydrolyze and in which uranium preferentially dissolves in the aqueous solution, and (b) recovering uranium from said aqueous solution by hydrolyzing said inorganic polymeric phosphoric acid or salt thereof to ortho phosphates.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 83 words
A process of stripping uranium from an organic solution containing an organic extractant and said uranium which comprises: (a) contacting said organic solution with an aqueous solution of an inorganic polymeric phosphoric acid or salt thereof under conditions in which the inorganic polymeric phosphoric acid or salt thereof does not rapidly hydrolyze and in which uranium preferentially dissolves in the aqueous solution, and (b) recovering uranium from said aqueous solution by hydrolyzing said inorganic polymeric phosphoric acid or salt thereof to ortho phosphates.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 43 words
The process of claim 1 where said organic extractant is selected from the group consisting of dialkylphosphoric acids, trialkylphosphates, dialkyl alkyl phosphonates, alkyl dialkylphosphinates, trialkyl phosphine oxides, mono- and di-esters of substituted phenol and phosphoric acid, tertiary and quaternary amines, and mixtures thereof.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
The process of claim 1 further comprising re-extracting said uranium from said aqueous solution containing ortho phosphates by contacting said aqueous solution with a second organic solution containing an organic extractant.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 49 words
The process of claim 3 wherein said organic extractant of said second organic solution is selected from the group consisting of dialkyl phosphoric acids, trialkylphosphates, dialkyl alkyl phosphonates, alkyl dialkylphosphonates, trialkyl phosphine oxides, mono and di-esters of substituted phenol and phosphoric acid, tertiary and quaternary amines, and mixtures thereof.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 75 words
A process of stripping uranium from an organic solution containing an organic extractant and tetravalent or hexavalent uranium which comprises (a) contacting said organic solution at a temperature between about 0° and 100° C. and a pH at least about6 with an aqueous solution of an inorganic polymeric phosphoric acid or salt thereof, and (b) recovering said uranium from said aqueous solution by hydrolyzing said inorganic polymeric phosphoric acid or salt thereof to ortho phosphates.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 75 words
A process of stripping uranium from an organic solution containing an organic extractant and tetravalent or hexavalent uranium which comprises (a) contacting said organic solution at a temperature between about 0° and 100° C. and a pH at least about6 with an aqueous solution of an inorganic polymeric phosphoric acid or salt thereof, and (b) recovering said uranium from said aqueous solution by hydrolyzing said inorganic polymeric phosphoric acid or salt thereof to ortho phosphates.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 14 words
The process of claim 5 wherein the temperature is at least about room temperature.
