Abstract

Abstract Hot melt adhesive is applied to a moving substrate in a pattern including at least two lines which extend transversely to one another, by conveying the substrate past a nozzle orifice through which a first line of molten adhesive is applied, as by extrusion, to the substrate parallel to the direction of substrate movement and, while continuing to move the substrate in the same direction, projecting another portion of the molten hot melt adhesive onto the substrate as a burst in the form of a flat sheet issuing from a fan spray orifice, this orifice being oriented so that the sheet is projected transversely to the direction of substrate movement, and terminating the burst so rapidly that the adhesive so projected is deposited on the moving substrate in the form of a line having a length in the crosswise direction that is several times its width.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 226 words
In the application of a hot melt adhesive to a substrate in a pattern which includes adhesive lines that extend transversely to one another, the method of applying said hot melt adhesive in said pattern comprising, depositing one line of predetermined length of said hot melt adhesive from a stationary orifice onto said substrate while conveying said substrate past said orifice, said one line of adhesive extending parallel to the direction of movement of said substrate, and, while conveying said substrate in said direction, spraying a flat sheet of said hot melt adhesive from a stationary nozzle which presents a flat spray orifice so oriented that said flat sheet extends in a plane transverse to the direction of substrate movement, said flat sheet having lateral edges which diverge angularly as a fan as said sheet moves from said flat spray orifice toward said substrate, and terminating said spraying so quickly, in relation to the rate of substrate movement, that a transverse line of adhesive is deposited on said substrate, said transverse line having a width in the direction of substrate movement which is substantially less than its length, said transverse line extending transversely to said one line, said flat spray orifice being spaced from said substrate to establish a length of said transverse line which is substantially greater than the width of said flat spray orifice.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 226 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 30 words
The method of claim 1 including the further step of pressing another substrate to said adhesive lines before said hot melt adhesive cools, to adhesively bond the two substrates together.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 30 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said one line is deposited by extruding said adhesive through a first stationary nozzle, said transverse line being sprayed from a second stationary nozzle.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
The method of claim 3 wherein said spraying is commenced at substantially the same time as said extruding, but is terminated sooner, while said extruding continues.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
The method of claim 3 wherein said spraying has a duration less than 1/4 that of said extruding.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 18 words
The method of claim 3 wherein said transverse line is deposited while said one line is being extruded.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said adhesive is a foamed hot melt adhesive.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said substrate is an end closure of a self-opening sack.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said substrate is a flap of a corrugated carton.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 34 words
The method of claim 1 wherein both said first and second orifices are flat spray orifices, each hydraulically projecting a flat sheet of hot melt spray therefrom, the sheets being transverse to one another.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 10 wherein first and second orifices are presented in separate spaced nozzles.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said flat sheet is essentially continuous and is not atomized.
