A process for preparing dimethylaminosilane having the formula H.sub.4-a Si[N(CH.sub.3).sub.2 ].sub.a wherein a has a value of 2 to 4 inclusive, said process comprising reacting (1) copper activated silicon particles and (2) dimethylamine gas in a gas-solid reactor at a temperature in the range of about 195° C. to about 400° C.

A process for preparing dimethylaminosilane having the formula H.sub.4-a Si[N(CH.sub.3).sub.2 ].sub.a wherein a has a value of 2 to 4 inclusive, said process comprising reacting (1) copper activated silicon particles and (2) dimethylamine gas in a gas-solid reactor at a temperature in the range of about 195° C. to about 400° C.

A process as defined in claim 1, wherein the reaction is conducted at a temperature of about 230° C. to about 270° C.
