Claim 1
Independent Claim
101 words
A method of monitoring changes in the electrical properties of an ionic fluid when flowing along a solid interface whereby a double layer is formed between the interface and the bulk of the fluid, the method comprising: placing a first passive electrode in electrical communication with the bulk of the fluid on one side of the double layer; placing a second passive electrode in electrical communication with the solid interface on the other side of the double layer; and detecting the change in electrical potential resulting from the fluid flowing along the interface and developed between said first and second electrodes.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
101 words
A method of monitoring changes in the electrical properties of an ionic fluid when flowing along a solid interface whereby a double layer is formed between the interface and the bulk of the fluid, the method comprising: placing a first passive electrode in electrical communication with the bulk of the fluid on one side of the double layer; placing a second passive electrode in electrical communication with the solid interface on the other side of the double layer; and detecting the change in electrical potential resulting from the fluid flowing along the interface and developed between said first and second electrodes.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
25 words
The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said electrodes are kept out of physical contact with the portion of the fluid that is flowing.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
50 words
The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said fluid is a liquid and part of said solid interface is porous to ionic transport across the double layer formed thereon and said second electrode is placed on the side of said interface out of physical contact with the flowing liquid.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
44 words
The method as claimed in claim 3 wherein said method is for monitoring surface charge on solid particles suspended in an ionic liquid and said porous solid interface portion is comprised of substantially the same chemical composition as that of the suspended solid particles.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
121 words
A method of monitoring the wet processing of minerals wherein minerals are in suspension within a liquid, the method comprising: flowing a portion of said suspension along one side of a solid surface whereby a double layer is formed between said surface and the bulk of said suspension, said solid surface having a portion that is porous to ionic transport across the double layer formed thereon, whereby ionic conductivity is established through said porous portion; contacting the bulk portion of the flowing suspension with a first electrode; contacting the transported ions on the other side of the porous surface portion with a second electrode; and detecting the change in electrical potential, caused by flow, developed between said first and second electrodes.
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
52 words
The method as claimed in claim 5 wherein said porous surface portion is comprised of the same mineral that is in suspension; and further including detecting the zero point of charge on said suspended minerals by detecting the zero point of charge across the double layer formed at said porous surface portion.
