Abstract

Abstract An optical character reader for conversion of information to a machine readable code from a strip of aplha-numeric characters on the face of a document. It includes an elongated document slot along which the document may be hand guided through a predetermined path. Optical viewing means is provided across a scan line intersecting the path of the alpha-numeric characters. A character scanning assembly electronically generates images of each character. Recognition processing means encodes these images into a machine readable code. All of the physical, optical and electronic components are contained within a compact single enclosure. Optical viewing is accomplished on a separable frame assembly having a surface area adapted to engage the document. The frame includes at least one light guiding slot and an intersecting view slot or aperture. An upright ventilation duct intersects the light guiding slot. Convection air currents created by the heated lamps are utilized to assure movement of air and dust particles in the area of the narrow viewing slot.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 154 words
A document viewing assembly for reflecting light from a strip of visual indicia located along the face of a document, comprising: a frame having a stationary wall surface area adapted to slidably engage the face of a document; a light guiding slot formed within the frame in open communication with the stationary wall surface area; a viewing slot formed through the frame and openly intersecting the light guiding slot at a location inwardly adjacent to the stationary wall surface; heat emitting light means mounted on said frame within the light guiding slot for illuminating the area of intersection between the light guiding slot and the viewing slot; and upright ventilation duct means formed through the frame from an open bottom end to an open top end, said duct means being in open communication with the light guiding slot for directing convection air currents about said light means in response to the heat emitted thereby.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 154 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 48 words
The assembly as defined by claim 1 wherein the viewing slot is upright and wherein there are two light guiding slots, the viewing slot being centered between the light guiding slots, said light guiding slots being equiangularly spaced from the viewing slot and from the stationary wall surface.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 29 words
The assembly as defined by claim 2 wherein the light guiding slots are oriented at right angles to each other, with each being 45° from the stationary wall surface.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 47 words
The assembly as defined by claim 1 wherein the viewing slot is upright and defined by a sharp edge inwardly adjacent the stationary wall surface area, said viewing slot being bounded by side walls that diverge outwardly from one another through the frame from the sharp edge.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 53 words
The assembly as defined by claim 1 wherein there are two converging light guiding slots leading toward the stationary wall surface from two ventilation ducts and wherein the viewing slot is positioned between the ventilation ducts and intersects the converging light guiding slots at a location inwardly adjacent to the stationary wall surface.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 34 words
The assembly as defined by claim 5 wherein the heat emitting light means is comprised of four electrical lamps with two lamps projecting into each upright ventilation duct adjacent as associated light guiding slot.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 47 words
The assembly as defined by claim 5 wherein the viewing slot is upright and defined by a sharp edge inwardly adjacent the stationary wall surface area, said viewing slot being bounded by side walls that diverge outwardly from one another through the frame from the sharp edge.
