Abstract

Abstract This disclosure is directed to an economical system for the pyrolysis of municipal solid waste to recover valuable by-products while reducing the putrecibility and bulk of the residue requiring disposal. Prior to this treatment, the solid waste has been processed to remove most of the metallic components, and shredded, which steps are not part of the invention disclosed. The pyrolysis and by-product recovery technology is complicated by (a) the inherent variability of the chemical and physical characteristics of the shredded solid waste as received at the pyrolysis plant and (b) the relatively low heat value of said waste as thus received. This pyrolysis and product recovery system includes an improved pyrolysis retort indirectly heated principally by combustion of the least desirable by-product, the solid waste, in combination with a furnace for the char combustion, a condenser for the pyrolysis vapor including means for gravity separation of the gas, liquid and solid residues entrained therein, and improved means for conveying the materials through the system including intermittently driven rams for delivering solids into the retort and furnace, featuring an inwardly-tapered nozzle in which a plug of waste is maintained to seal against air or gas passage.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 170 words
In municipal waste pyrolysis systems having a feed hopper for shredded municipal waste with a discharge opening adjacent the bottom thereof and an indirectly heated pyrolysis retort having a raw material inlet at one end thereof connected to said discharge opening of said feed hopper, the improvement comprising: a tubular nozzle concentric with the axis of said retort extending from the bottom of said feed hopper into said retort, said nozzle having an inwardly tapered entrance and comprising said discharge opening of said feed hopper and also said raw material inlet of said retort: a variable stroke reciprocating ram mounted to traverse the bottom of said feed hopper in a direction co-axial with said nozzle, and means for adjusting the length of the stroke of said ram towards said nozzle, whereby the forward stroke of said ram forces said waste from said feed hopper into said retort at an adjustable variable rate sufficient to maintain a plug of said waste in sealing relation between said retort and said feed hopper.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 170 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 161 words
The combination as set forth in claim 1 further characterized in that retort is comprised of a tubular casing, a material conveying screw within said casing and a heating jacket surrounding said casing, in which said casing does not extend to the end of said jacket at the feed end of said retort but has a sliding fit on the outside of said nozzle and also in which said conveying screw terminates in advance of said nozzle within said retort and is driven from the discharge end at a rotation rate independent of the refuse feed rate by said ram and exceeding the maximum feed rate with said casing filled with material, whereby said jacket, said casing and said screw are free for independent thermal expansion and contraction while maintaining a seal at the feed end, and whereby said refuse delivered within said casing is broken up and agitated by said screw for exposure to the heated wall of said casing.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 163 words
In a municipal waste pyrolysis system having an indirectly heated pyrolysis retort with a pyrolyzed refuse outlet at one end thereof and a combustion furnace to generate the heat for pyrolyzation in said retort, the improvement comprising a gravity separating chute connected to said pyrolyzed refuse outlet of said retort, a char inlet opening into said furnace, a tubular nozzle concentric with the axis of said char inlet opening of said furnace and abutting against said furnace at said char inlet opening, said nozzle having an inwardly tapered entrance end at the bottom of said gravity separating chute at which the separated char settles, a variable stroke reciprocating ram mounted to traverse the bottom of said chute in a direction co-axial with said nozzle, and means for adjusting the stroke of said ram whereby said char is delivered into said furnace at an adjustable variable rate sufficient to maintain a plug of said char in sealing relation between said chute and said furnace.
Claim 5
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 91 words
The combination set forth in claim 3 futher characterized by an outlet opening at the top of said gravity separating chute for the fluid components of said pyrolyzed refuse, a jet condenser for the liquid components of said fluid components, a conduit between said outlet opening at the top of said chute and said jet condenser, and means for passing the flue gas from said furnace in indirect heating relation with said conduit to prevent condensation of the vapor fractions of said fluid pyrolysis components in transit to said jet condenser.
