Abstract

Abstract A marking transfer sheet comprising an imaging layer of pigment, binder and a color-forming, radiation-sensitive component on a carrier film and a process for its use comprising exposing the imaging layer to a pattern of radiation to form a mark, heating the imaging layer until adhesive, and contacting the imaging layer with a support more adherent to the imaging layer than the carrier film; and optionally separating the carrier film from the imaging layer.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 208 words
A process for marking an object by (a) exposing a transfer sheet comprising an imaging layer on a carrier support, the imaging layer comprising (1) a radiation-sensitive composition which, on exposure to radiation, is capable of forming a colored substance that can absorb at least a portion of the wavelength light in the visible spectrum, the radiation-sensitive composition being present in an amount sufficient to produce, upon exposure to radiation, a detectable difference in diffuse reflectance of density between exposed and unexposed areas, (2) pigment capable of diffusely reflecting the wavelengths of light absorbed by the colored substance, the pigment being present in a density of about from 0.05 to 0.34 gram per square foot and (3) radiation-transmissive, colorless, polymeric, filmforming, thermoplastic binder; the transfer sheet being exposed to a pattern of radiation of a wavelength to which the radiation-sensitive composition is sensitive to produce a detectable difference in diffuse reflectance density between exposed and unexposed areas; (b) heating the image layer to a temperature of about from 40° to 220° C. at which the outer surface of the layer is adhesive; and (c) contacting the outer surface of the imaging layer with a receiving support which is more adherent to the imaging layer than the carrier support.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 208 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
A process of claim 1 further comprising separating the carrier support from the imaging layer.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the imaging layer has a thickness of about from 0.2 to 0.8 mil.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 19 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the imaging layer has a thickness of about from 0.2 to 0.5 mil.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the radiation-sensitive composition forms a colored substance upon exposure to ultraviolet light.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 15 words
A process of claim 5 wherein the colored substance is fixed upon exposure to light.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 13 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the pigment is a heavy metal oxide.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 14 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the pigment consists essentially of TiO 2 .
