Abstract

Abstract An improved method for the enhanced synthesis of paraffinic hydrocarbons with chain lengths of from 2 to 6 carbon atoms inclusive with reduced methane formation which method comprises the steps of passing a synthesis gas stream comprising CO and H2 over a catalyst at a temperature and pressure for a time sufficient to generate the desired C2-C6 paraffinic product, wherein the catalyst comprises from about 0.01 to about 15 wt. % nickel on a support selected from the group consisting of tantalum oxides, niobium oxides, and other tantalum or niobium containing oxides and mixtures thereof. The nickel average crystallite size is preferably less than 5 nm (50 A). The supported nickel catalyst has a BET surface area of from about 10 to 60 m2/g.
