Abstract
Abstract A β,β,β-trihalo-α-hydroxyethyl (e.g. --CHOH--CCl 3 ) group is introduced into a 2,6-dihydroxy pyridine. The 3-formyl-4-methyl-2,6-dihydroxy pyridine produced by splitting off haloform from the trihalohydroxyethyl product, is a desirable intermediate for the making of dyes and other products, and the alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts of the formyl compound are more stable forms of this intermediate.
