Abstract

Abstract A sized composition and method of making same is provided for rendering sized glass fibers that have improved dispersibility in aqueous solutions. The size composition has about 35 to about 90 weight percent of the polyvinyl alcohol; and about 3 to about 14 weight percent of a polyamino functional polyamide resin; and about 1 to about 4 weight percent of an organic carboxylic acid having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, which is used to react with the polyamino functional polyamide resin to produce the carboxylic acid salt of the polyamino functional polyamide resin, wherein the amount of polyvinyl alcohol is at least about 5 times the amount of polyamide resin; and about 1 to about 10 weight percent of a nonionic wetting agent; about 0.5 to about 3 weight percent of an amino-alkyl-alkoxy-silane and about 5 to about 30 weight percent of an alkyl imidazoline textile softener. These weight percents are based on the non-aqueous components in the aqueous size solution. Also a anti-foaming agent may be incorporated into the size composition in an amount of about 0.1 to about 1 weight percent.
