Abstract
Abstract The invention provides an air induction system or manifold for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine, which is arranged in two parts, the first having portions of the induction passages for each cylinder formed therein, and the second attached to the first to form a housing therewith in communication with each of the induction passages, at least the first part being arranged so that it may be pressure die cast in manufacture.

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim
154 words
In combination, an internal combustion engine and an air induction system therefor, said air induction system comprising a distributor housing having an air inlet opening, and a plurality of induction passages having respective inlets whereby the interior of the distributor housing communicates with the interiors of the passages respectively and having respective oulets for connection to respective inlet ports of the engine, the internal cross section of each induction passage widening towards one or both ends thereof, said induction system being formed from a first pressure die cast part which defines a first portion of each induction passage and is formed integrally with flange means at the outlet ends of the induction passages for mounting said first part on a face of the engine, and a second part which defines a second portion of each induction passage and is joined to said first part in a plane which cuts lengthwise through the induction passages.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
43 words
A combination as claimed in claim 1, wherein each induction passage is curved in a direction transverse to the plane in which said first and second parts are joined and has a cross-section extending from said plane which is free of re-entrant parts.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
19 words
A combination as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first part alone defines said outlets of the induction passages.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
35 words
A combination as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein each induction passage is curved in a direction parallel to said plane and is of substantially the same length as the other induction passages.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
92 words
A combination as claimed in claim 4, wherein said induction passages are in first and second groups and are each curved in said direction parallel to said plane through an arc of 90° to 180°, the passages of said first group being curved in said direction parallel to said plane about respective axes which are substantially coincident and the passages of said second group being curved in said direction parallel to said plane about respective axes which are substantially coincident, the passages being substantially parallel to one another at their inlet ends.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
32 words
A combination as claimed in claim 5, wherein the passage of each group which has the smallest radius of curvature about said axis is curved in S-shape towards the outlet end thereof.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
23 words
A combination as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein said flange means are disposed wholly to one side of said plane.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
36 words
A combination as claimed in claim 5, wherein the outlets of the passages are arranged in a row, and the two groups of passages are arranged symmetrically about a plane which extends transversely of said row.
