Abstract

Abstract A diaphragm for use in the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solutions in electrolytic diaphragm cells is comprised of a mixture of sand and a polyolefin thermoplastic polymeric binding agent. The diaphragms may include a support material and an additive such as a lubricant. The diaphragms of the present invention have increased stability, a long operational life and are non-polluting.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim 69 words
A diaphragm for use in the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride brines which comprises a cohesive body formed of a mixture of sand and a polyolefin binding agent, said polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of olefins having from 2 to about 6 carbon atoms and their chloro- and fluoro- derivatives, said sand having a particle size smaller than about 40 mesh and larger than about 500 mesh.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 69 words
A diaphragm for use in the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride brines which comprises a cohesive body formed of a mixture of sand and a polyolefin binding agent, said polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of olefins having from 2 to about 6 carbon atoms and their chloro- and fluoro- derivatives, said sand having a particle size smaller than about 40 mesh and larger than about 500 mesh.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 41 words
The diaphragm of claim 1 in which said cohesive body is comprised of a mixture of from about 30 to about 70 percent by volume of said sand and from about 70 to about 30 percent by volume of said polyolefin.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 13 words
The diaphragm of claim 2 in which said mixture contains a wetting agent.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 43 words
The diaphragm of claim 3 in which said mixture of said sand and said polyolefin binding agent contains an electrically conductive support material selected from the group consisting of fibers, meshes, and fabrics, said electrically conductive support material being encapsulated in said mixture.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
The diaphragm of claim 4 in which said support material is a nickel mesh.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 12 words
The diaphragm of claim 3 in which said mixture contains a lubricant.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 26 words
The diaphragm of claim 3 in which said polyolefin compound is selected from the group consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene, fluorinated ethylenepropylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene, polyvinyl fluoride and polyvinylidene fluoride.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
The diaphragm of claim 7 in which said sand has a particle size of from about 100 to about 200 mesh.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 11 words
The diaphragm of claim 8 in which said polyolefin is polytetrafluoroethylene.
Claim 11
