Abstract

Abstract A simple direct acting mechanism moves a circular rotatable disc cutter or two such cutters first to rollably engage a hard surface and then to traverse the surface to part the stock between a side-by-side pair of cords or wires. The cutter or cutters are blunt edged, as well as unheated and so avoid baring the cords or wires while parting the stock without the undesired effect of sharp or hot knives. The cutter or cutters are shiftable along the axis or axes to accommodate deviation of the cords with respect to the travel of the cutter. The foregoing abstract is not to be taken as limiting the invention of this application, and in order to understand the full nature and extent of the technical disclosure of this application, reference must be made to the accompanying drawing and the following detailed description.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 181 words
Apparatus for cutting tire making material having parallel closely spaced cords or wires embedded in uncured rubbery gum, the apparatus comprising frame means, ply stock support means in said frame means having an uninterrupted hard surface for supporting said ply stock, carrier means mounted on the frame means to extend transversely of said support means and mounted for movement toward and away from said support means in parallel relation thereto, carriage means mounted on the carrier means for movement transversely of the support means parallel thereto, swing arm means pivotally mounted on the carriage means to swing in a plane normal to said support means, a cutter shaft carried by the swing arm means, and a single disccutter having a blunt circular edge rollably engageable with said hard surface to part said gum between a side-by-side pair of said cords or wires, said cutter being mounted to rotate freely about the cutter shaft, said cutter being displaceable coaxially of the shaft in response to deviations of said pair of cords or wires relative to the direction of movement of the carriage.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 181 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 45 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, said cutter being engageable with said surface means during downward movement of the carrier means and then displaceable along said surface means in response to said downward movement while the carriage means remains unmoved relative to the carrier means.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 98 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 2, further comprising second carriage means mounted on the carrier means for movement in a direction opposed to the movement of the first carriage means, a second disc-cutter having a blunt circular edge rollably engageable with said surface means to part said gum between a side-by-side pair of said cords or wires, said second cutter being mounted to rotate freely on its cutter shaft, said second cutter being displaceable coaxially of the shaft in response to deviations of said pair of cords or wires relative to the direction of movement of said carriage.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 45 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, said cutter being displaceable along said support surface in a first direction in response to said downward movement of the carrier means and in a second direction opposite said first direction in response to movment of said carriage means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 54 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 3, further comprising centering means carried on said swing arm, means for coaligning the second cutter with the first said cutter while the latter moves to enter the ply stock between two adjacent cords or wires whereby the second cutter enters the separation groove formed by the first cutter.
